County Jail

Seven people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Bruce Lee Artis, 41, Cloverdale, was lodged at the jail for contempt of court.

At 8:45 p.m. Matthew Joseph Cole, 20, Greencastle, was arrested for theft and battery.

At 11:13 p.m. Margaret Frances Terry, 18, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for operating while intoxicated.

* At 4:35 p.m. Saturday, Beth Ann Thompson, 30, Greencastle, was booked in for failure to appear and neglect of a dependent.

* At 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Anthony Michael Lee Sanders, 20, Greencastle, was charged with domestic battery, strangulation and criminal confinement.

At 5 p.m. Richard Alan Swafford, 52, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail for operating while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.

* At 3:45 a.m. Monday, Shannon Walker, 25, Reelsville, was booked in on a warrant.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to 11 recent traffic accidents.

* At 3:05 a.m. on Thursday, Richard R. Woodland, 57, Indianapolis, was eastbound on Interstate 70 in a 2011 International 700 semi tractor. A 2000 Dodge Dakota registered to Glen V. Castro, San Diego, was parked on the eastbound shoulder after having engine trouble.

Woodland told Capt. Tom Helmer his semi drifted off the travel portion of the road while being passed by another semi. The drive wheel on his right side made contact with the left side fender of the trailer the parked pickup was pulling, as well as the left rear view mirror of the pickup.

No one was injured in the accident.

Castro's truck and trailer had to be towed because of the earlier mechanical issue as well as damage to the trailer.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 5:38 p.m. on Thursday, Kaylee N. Sutherlin, 18, Cloverdale, was southbound on County Road 25 East in a 2001 Toyota Celica.

She told Capt. Helmer she blacked out and her vehicle left the east side of the road. The car struck a ditch and continued southeast across a cornfield, coming to rest about 50 feet from the road.

Sutherlin told Helmer a box had hit her in the head earlier in the day at her place of work.

She signed a statement of release with Operation Life. Greencastle Fire Department and Greencastle Police Sgt. Ed Wilson also assisted at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 6:42 p.m. on Friday, Taylor P. Webster, 18, Roachdale, was northbound on County Road 200 East just north of Bainbridge in a 2014 Chevrolet when she hit a deer.

Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 8 p.m. on Friday, Blake A. Ludwig, 16, Spencer, was eastbound on U.S. 36 east of County Road 300 East in a 2001 GMC Sierra, approaching the downhill grade approaching the Big Walnut bridge.

Ludwig told Officer Rozelle he was traveling well over the 55-mph speed limit. Skid marks indicated the truck was sideways when crossing the center line, skidding 100 feet as it crossed the westbound lanes before hitting a rock wall with the passenger side and continuing another 80 feet backward before coming to rest.

Ludwig was uninjured.

The truck was totaled. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Mathew J. Healey, 49, Coatesville, was southbound on County Road 300 East, approaching County Road 50 South through heavy fog in a 2000 Jeep Cherokee.

Healey told Officer Rozelle he was familiar with the T intersection but did not see the stopsign in the heavy fog, going straight through the intersection, making heavy front-end impact with a tree.

Healey was uninjured.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 229 a.m. on Saturday, Christine L. Lindley, 35, Greencastle, was westbound through heavy fog on U.S. 36 in a 2015 Honda CRV.

She told Deputy Kyle Gibbons she tried to avoid a deer and left the road, hitting a mailbox and then a farm implement in the yard.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 6:01 p.m. on Saturday, Jessica A. Ferran, 33, Cloverdale, was westbound on County Road 1100 South in a 2005 Ford Expedition when she hit a deer.

Deputy Anthony Brown estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 6:07 p.m. on Saturday, William R. Caldwell, 69, Bainbridge, was southbound on U.S. 231 south of County Road 350 North in a 2015 Subaru Outback when he hit a deer.

Deputy Mike Downing estimated damage at $25,001-$50,000.

* At 1:55 a.m. on Sunday, Kathryn L. Slusser, 22, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 1000 South near County Road 800 West in a 1999 Toyota Solara.

She told Deputy Brown as she turned onto 800 West and looked down at her GPS, then up to see a deer. She served to miss the animal and ran off the road, hitting a culvert.

Slusser was taken by friends to get medical attention.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 6:45 a.m. Monday, Andrew L. Dickey, 48, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2008 Toyota Yaris when he hit a deer, flipping the animal over the top of the car.

Capt. Helmer estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to seven dispatches and one medical run.

* At 5:10 p.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a two-vehicle accident at 706 E. Washington St. GFD assisted in the cleanup of fluids and debris.

* At 12:44 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a vehicle accident at the intersection of County Road 50 South and 300 East. Some fluid cleanup was required.

* At 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 300 S. Warren Dr. due to an activated pull station.

* At 3:08 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 807 S. College Ave. A detector had been set off by a discharged fire extinguisher.

* At 1:41 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 208 E. Olive St. due to cooking.

* At 1:13 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 208 E. Olive St. due to cooking.

* At 3:20 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at Central Elementary School, 1888 East U.S. 40, due to a dirty duct detector.
