Barnard home destroyed by pre-dawn fire

BARNARD -- Firefighters from seven different departments responded to a house fire Friday morning in Barnard, located in the northeastern corner of Putnam County.

Roachdale Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD) Chief Mike Poole said the department first received a call at 6 a.m. and didn't clear the scene, located along County Road 825 just off State Road 236, for quite some time.

"We finally cleared (the scene) around noon," Poole told the Banner Graphic.

"Most of the problem was that (the house) had been added on to several times. There were several false ceilings in there that could have caused trouble."

The fire began near a wood-burning stove, Poole said, of which the flue evidently had a "cracked liner."

Though the structure is considered to be a "total loss," the residents were able to save some of their belongings.

Firefighters fought the blaze and prevented any damage to other nearby structures.

A man and woman residing in the home reportedly escaped unharmed.

Fire departments from Roachdale, Russellville, Floyd Township, North Salem, Danville, Lizton and Pittsboro responded to the scene.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
