Sagamore Sue

Thursday, December 17, 2015

Dozens of well-wishers came out Thursday evening to wish outgoing Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray (at left in both photos) well as she completes eight years as the city's chief executive. Among the visitors was the longest-serving mayor (three terms/12 years) in city history, Nancy Michael, who shared a moment with her successor as together they represent the last 20 years of leadership for Greencastle. The highlight of the evening at the Music Squared facility on the square came when State Sen. Pete Miller (R-Avon) brought greetings from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, announcing that Mayor Murray has been made a Sagamore of the Wabash. Created by Indiana in the late 1940s, the Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest honor the governor of Indiana can bestow, a personal tribute usually given to those who rendered distinguished service to the state or the people of Indiana.
