Time Travelin' Genealogy Guild to resume Jan. 6 at PCPL

Sunday, January 3, 2016

The Putnam County Public Library's Time Travelin' Genealogy Guild will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. in the Local History and Genealogy Room.

It is an introductory training session for the powerful new microfilm reader which brings this part of the PCPL collection to the digital era.

Dubbed "Stevie," the reader is a ST View Scan II model hooked up to a brand new public computer and monitor. It is loaded with software that allows users to easily crop, focus and share the image.

Those pesky negative films (white print on black background) are converted to positive with the touch of a button. Besides printing, you can save your images via email, Google Drive, Dropbox, OCLC and FamilySearch or on your flash drive.

The Putnam County Public Library is a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, which means you can order microfilm from the Latter-Day Saints library in Utah for temporary or permanent addition to the PCPL collection.

That allows a family historian to research from other counties, states and nations without the expense and travel time.

The library also has birth, death and marriage records from Putnam County, as well as newspapers that have not been digitized from the Banner Graphic and Russellville.
