Purdue Master Gardener volunteers contribute to the lives of Indiana residents and local communities, including Putnam County, each year.

Last year, the Putnam County Master Gardeners volunteered more than 1,100 hours locally by hosting horticulture-related events, working at the Putnam County Fair and working with local schools to help three high school seniors receive scholarships from the organization.

During the December Putnam County Master Gardener Association meeting, several local residents received a new Master Gardener certification. To earn Purdue Master Gardener certification, volunteers must complete horticultural training conducted by Purdue Extension county offices and engage in volunteer service that has been approved by Master Gardener county coordinators and performed in Indiana communities.

Those receiving Master Gardener certification (35 cumulative volunteer hours and 35 cumulative education hours) include Dave Burgess, Denise Burgess, Linda Clute, Brenda Freeman, John Garner, Karen Hunter and Jamie Jones.

Those receiving their Advanced Master Gardener certification (60 cumulative volunteer hours and 45 cumulative education hours) include Randy Bee, Laura Lee Young Bollman, Ruth Everts, Jean Fisher-Dreihs, Margaret Kenton, Kristi Nelson, Howard Shrader and Vickie Whicker.

Those receiving their Advanced Bronze Master Gardener certification (200 cumulative volunteer hours and 60 cumulative education hours) include Meredith Bee, Nan Girk, James King, Regina King and Karen Martoglio.

Those receiving their Advanced Silver Master Gardener certification (500 cumulative volunteer hours and 75 cumulative education hours) include Cyndi Blocher, Jane Jackson and Patricia Livvix.

Leroy Blocher received the Advanced Gold 1,000 Master Gardener certification for having at least 1,000 cumulative volunteer hours and 100 cumulative education hours.

Anyone who would like to know more about the Purdue Master Gardener program may contact the Putnam County Extension Office at 653-8411.

The next Purdue Master Gardener course will be conducted in late summer.
