CLINTON -- The Greencastle Tiger Cub boys' basketball team traveled to South Vermillion to take on the Wildcats in a Western Indiana Conference high school basketball game. The Cubs got a 40-point explosion from the state's third leading scorer in Ryan Coble to gain a conference win, 69-59.

The Cubs are now 7-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

"It was a good overall win. Anytime you go on the road and get win, it is a good win," Greencastle head coach Troy Greenlee said.

The Tiger Cubs came out and established themselves early on. Coble got to the basket to open things up and then Colin York nailed two early threes from the corner to provide a spark for Greencastle.

"That was a great start for Colin. He hit a couple of shots," Greenlee said.

Coble then proceeded to score 10 straight points. They hit 9-of-14 field goals and didn't turn the ball over once in the first quarter as the Tiger Cubs ended the period with a 25-14 lead.

"We want to be under 10 turnovers a game. It was a game of runs, we came pretty well and then were able to sustain most of the game," Greenlee said.

Greencastle never trailed in the game and maintained its lead throughout the second quarter. The Tiger Cubs only scored 12 points in the second quarter but still took excellent care of the basketball. Greencastle finished the half with zero turnovers and had only seven for the game. The Cubs still led 37-25 at the half.

The Wildcats made their run early in the second half, cutting the lead to five at 37-32, but the Tiger Cub's withstood the rally and slowly built their margin up to nine at the end of the quarter. The Wildcats were in striking distance at 49-40.

The two teams played the first half of the fourth quarter at a quick pace and traded baskets, with 4:47 left to play, Greencastle spread the floor and went old-school with a four-corners offense. That kind of took the Wildcats out of their game and they never got closer than nine points the rest of the night.

"They (South Vermillion) needed possessions, we pulled it out and our guys did a great job of handling the basketball," Greenlee said.

Coble added to his impressive scoring resume with 40 points and Colin York added 18 for the Cubs. The senior guard scored in a variety of ways. He hit from three, he drove to the basket and went to the foul line.

"Obviously Ryan had a good game. He really opens things up for everyone by the way he can get to the basket," Greenlee said.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Adam Hedden and Dru Strayer with 14 points, Mason Wiltermood chipped in 11.

Greencastle will host Edgewood on Saturday night.
