Howard's 24 leads to win

Maya Howard poured in a career-high 24 points to lead DePauw to a 75-47 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over visiting Hiram.

The Tigers improved to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the conference, while the Terriers slipped to 11-11 overall and 5-8 in the NCAC.

The Tigers scored 10 straight in the first to take a 12-2 lead and Hiram didn't hit its first field goal until 24 seconds remained in the period as DePauw took a 14-5 lead into the second quarter.

Savana Lowery scored just 15 seconds into the second to trim the lead to 14-7, but the Tigers responded with a 19-0 run that included nine from Howard and pushed DePauw's lead to 33-7. The Tigers held a 37-9 lead at the intermission as Howard totaled an already career-high 19. DePauw shot 46.4 percent in the first half to Hiram's 9.1 percent.

The Terriers matched their first-half scoring ouput in the opening four minutes of the second half and closed the gap to 21 points, but DePauw finished the third with a 10-1 stretch that extended the lead to 30 after three quarters.

In addition to Howard's 24 points in 26 minutes, 14 other Tigers reached the scorebook in the win. Taylor Howard, Morgan Skordos and Melinda Franke each grabbed six rebounds as DePauw held a 51-25 edge on the boards. Franke dished out three assists and Claire Ryan recorded three steals.

Mercedes Jones paced Hiram with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Kaylee Shockley followed with 10 points. Dana Perotta led the way with three assists.

DePauw shot 38.8 percent from the floor to Hiram's 29.8 and the Tigers committed 14 turnovers to the Terriers' 23 for a 28-10 edge in points off of turnovers.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, February 10, in a 6 p.m. NCAC game at Wittenberg.
