County Jail

Several people were booked in to the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 8:52 a.m. on Tuesday, Garry Thomas Woessner, 44, Indianapolis, was lodged at the jail on a court order.

At 2 p.m. John Michael Fields, 29, Indianapolis, was taken into custody on a court order.

At 8:50 p.m. Robert Dale Barger, 31, Fillmore, was housed at the jail on a warrant.

At 9 p.m., four different people were booked in on warrants. Alex Mitchell Hardcastle, 27, Indianapolis; Keisha Smith, 40, no city listed; Jennifer Lynn Tafoya, 39, Indianapolis; and Walter Warren, 31, no city listed, were all booked in on local warrants.

* At 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Mathew Marcel Sorrels, 38, no city listed, was arrested for violation of home detention.

At 4 p.m. Chadwick John Mullins, 38, Greenwood, was housed at the jail by court order.

* At 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Alan Lee Manning, 30, Spencer, was lodged at the jail for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended license.

At 12:30 a.m. Courtney Jane Michalik, 24, Cloverdale, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of methamphetamine.

City Police

Two suspects reportedly involved in a shoplifting incident at the Dollar General on Greencastle's East Side were arrested recently.

Officer Darrel Bunten arrested Alexis Cheyenne Bean, 18, Cloverdale, and Wayne Franklyn Burk, 25, Clay City, after they were detained by store officials and Indiana State Police officers who had been eating lunch at a nearby restaurant. The incident occurred at 3 p.m. Feb. 11.

Bean was arrested and lodged in the Putnam County Jail for reportedly stealing a bag of Cheetos, valued at $1.30, and a bottle of Mucinex, valued at $11. Authorities said surveillance video shows Bean concealing the Cheetos under her shirt.

Burk, meanwhile, was taken to the jail for allegedly shoplifting a 10-pack of Durcell AAA batteries, listed at $6.50, a tube of Gorilla Glue and a 20-ounce bottle of Mountain Dew.

In total, the items taken at Dollar General were valued at $32.44, Officer Bunten reported.

In court earlier this week, Bean pled guilty and received time served (five days in jail) with the rest of a one-year sentence suspended.

Burk, meanwhile, pled not guilty and was held on $500 cash bond. Attorney Mindy Jackman-Hanlin was appointed to represent him.

In another case, a 30-year-old Putnam County man will be summoned into court on a charge of possession of paraphernalia.

Cory Smith, Fillmore, was stopped at 10:33 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Goodwill store on Indianapolis Road. Officer Kyle Lee cited Smith.

Seven traffic citations were written recently by city officers.

-- At 11:12 a.m. Thursday, Corey Duff, 38, Greencastle, was cited by Officer Nick Eastham.

Stopped at Deerfield Lane and Fawnview Drive, Duff was cited for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

-- At 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Kelli Alexander, 37, Greencastle, was ticketed by Capt. Chris Jones.

Stopped on Shadowlawn Avenue, Alexander was cited for having an expired license plate (Feb. 7, 2016).

-- At 9:49 a.m. Wednesday, Niki Smith, 28, Greencastle, was ticketed for speeding by Capt Jones.

Stopped on South Jackson Street, Smith was cited for 45 mph in a 30-mph zone.

-- At 11:26 a.m. Sunday, Andrew Bethel, 21, Greencastle, was ticketed for speeding by Officer Eastham.

Stopped on Fillmore Road near the IAC factory, Bethel was cited for 51 mph in a 30-mph zone.

-- At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Kate Velazquez, 32, Greencastle, was ticketed by Capt. Jones.

Stopped on Veterans Memorial Highway, Velazquez was cited for having an expired license plate (Nov. 21, 2015).

-- At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nancy Cormier, 69, Attica, was ticketed for speeding by Capt. Jones.

Cormier was stopped on Veterans Highway for 55 mph in a 40-mph zone.

-- At 2:10 a.m. Saturday, Danny Cornelius, 50, Terre Haute, was ticketed by Officer Matt Huffman.

Cornelius was stopped on U.S. 231 South and cited for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

Sheriff's Department

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department responded to four recent property-damage crashes.

* At 10:05 p.m. on Monday, Sharice M. Culley, 33, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 1100 North in a 1999 Chevrolet pickup when her right front tire lost traction due to road conditions.

Deputy Gibbons reported that vehicle ran off the north side of the road, ran over a phone box and hit a tree.

The vehicle was disabled but the homeowner allowed Culley to leave it overnight to attempt to retrieve the next day.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. Culley had no insurance at the time of the crash.

* At 5:19 a.m. on Tuesday, Mark D. Musselman, 53, Bainbridge, was southbound on U.S. 231 just south of U.S. 36 in a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban when he hit a deer.

Deputy Mike Downing estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

* At 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Clyde W. Hinkle, 73, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 attempting to turn left into New Hope Fellowship in a 2002 Buick Century. He told Capt. Steve Fenwick he was waiting for southbound traffic to clear before he turned.

Sean M. Donahue, 49, Greencastle, was also northbound in a 1998 Mercury Nautica when he noticed Hinkle's vehicle. Donahue told Fenwick he slammed on the brakes but they locked up and he struck Hinkle's car in the passenger side rear.

The impact pushed Hinkle's car forward in the lane. Donahue's vehicle veered into a bean field.

Donahue's vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 9:27 p.m. on Tuesday, Brett M. Gierke, 21, Fillmore, was eastbound on County Road 100 North attempting to turn northbound onto county Road 275 East in a 2001 Chrysler.

The vehicle lost traction and left the road on the east side, making right front impact with a culvert.

Downing estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to one dispatch and one medical run.

* At 6:07 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 484 E. Glenview Dr. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 6:34 a.m.
