State Road 240 closing likely through July

Sunday, March 20, 2016

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that State Road 240 will close on or after Friday, April 1 for a bridge rehabilitation project, east of Greencastle over Deer Creek.

Duncan Robertson Inc. was awarded the $341,882 contract for work on the Chadd Valley area bridge.

This bridge project, which will overlay the deck, is located a little more than four miles east of Greencastle.

The roadway is scheduled to reopen July 31, INDOT officials said.

The official detour follows U.S. 231 south to U.S. 40 east to State Road 75 north and back to State Road 240. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.

  • Someone at INDOT needs to explain why it takes 4 months to do an overlay on a small bridge. Any incentives for the contractor to finish early? If not, they'll use up the whole 4 months.

  • Six times that I know of in the last twenty five years, they have shut 240 down. Last year it was down for three months to install a culvert. The county did one on our road in a day. The bridge over White River at Spencer is getting the same treatment, but leaving the bridge open on one lane. That bridge is 3 times longer and only costs $4000 more to do. And....lets not talk about the crappy chip and seal job that actually made the road worse.
