Putnam Surgical Specialities recently announced the addition of Dr. Paul Szotek Jr., to its team.

Dr. Szotek studied at Indiana University, Bloomington, and was later certified in general surgery by The American Board of Surgery. While performing research at the Pediatric Surgical Research Laboratories at Harvard/Massachusets General Hospital in Boston, he performed stem cell research and was the first to identify and describe ovarian cancer stem cells. He later taught in IU's trauma and acute care surgery program while developing the abdominal wall reconstruction program.

He is an active member of the American Hernia Society and a frequent speaker on acute care surgery. In 2014, he was the first doctor in Indiana to remove an abdomen tumor using Google Glass technology, eyewear that works like Apple watches. He is the co-founder of the Wearable Technology in Healthcare (WATCH) Society, and is working to develop tele-monitoring applications. He also spearheaded the creation of the Indiana Hernia Center.

With the addition of Dr. Szotek, the Putnam Surgical Specialities now has four certified surgeons. For more information about available services, call 658-2710.
