NPHS baseball team loses to Mustangs

ELLETTSVILLE - The North Putnam Cougars hosted the Edgewood Mustangs on Wednesday night in a Western Indiana Conference baseball game. The Cougars were beaten the night before at Edgewood 7-2 and came up a little short again, this time losing 6-4.

The Mustangs used a four-run first inning to take the second game in a row from North. The Mustangs used four hits to power their way to a lead they would never relinquish. Edgewood added another run in the second to lead 5-0 before the Cougars got untracked.

"We got off to a rocky start, same as last night. I think our kids are pressing. They have got to let the game come to them. I think we won the game after the first inning," North Putnam head coach Brian Jeter said.

North started chipping away in the third. Kyler Jeter scored during a three-hit inning for the Cougars. They also picked up single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but it was not enough to overcome the early Mustang lead.

Coach Jeter still has a lot of confidence in his team. "If we cut our mental mistakes, we win both games (Tuesday and Wednesday). We made a lot of base running errors and didn't hit our cutoff's. If we cut the mental mistakes this could be scary," Jeter said.

The Cougars outhit the Mustangs 11-10, but couldn't get that big inning as North stranded 10 runners on base on the night.

The Cougars were led offensively by Jeter who picked up three hits on the night. Bobby Scheele, Daniel Huffman, and Max Haste also contributed multi-hit games for North Putnam. Kaine Benge and Jeter picked up extra base hits on the night, with Jeter scoring two of the Cougar runs.

North will play again tonight (Thursday) as they travel to Rockville to try and improve on their 3-2 record. Jeter is hoping to reestablish what got his team off to a 3-0 start on the season.

"Our kids have got get back to baseball basics. Pitching and defense win ball games. If we get back to that, we could be really good," Jeter said.
