Highway accident sends three to Hendricks, four to Putnam County hospitals
BAINBRIDGE -- A collision involving two vehicles on U.S. 231 North saw seven patients sent to area hospitals Friday afternoon.
Three, more serious injuries were reported with those transported to Hendricks Regional Health in Danville and four sent to Putnam County Hospital.
"I think their saving grace was that the impact occurred far enough to the rear of the vehicle," Simmons continued. "If it had been a side impact, there would have been extreme injuries -- or worse."
The Putnam County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) was the lone authority on the scene as the accident took place five miles north of Greencastle at the area's well-known "Shortcut Road."
Organizations responding to the scene other than PCSD included the Bainbridge Fire Department, Putnam County Operation Life, PMH Ambulance of Roachdale and Kenny's Auto Service and Towing of Bainbridge.
"Surely, the way the vehicle was sitting, it spun a couple of times," said Deputy Virgil Lanning.
"Everyone was coherent and talking when we arrived on the scene," newly-added Deputy Elizabeth Campbell added.
Debris, including glass, personal items and fluids, littered the roadway as workers from Kenny's Auto collected the vehicles.
PCSD, who first received the dispatch at 2:29 p.m., cleared the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. and traffic resumed as normal.
