Bicentennial moments

Putnam was not recognized as a county when Indiana became a state in 1816.

Due to the very sparse population in most of Indiana (away from the Ohio and Wabash rivers), we were included in the enormous "Knox County."

Knox would be subdivided many times, eventually yielding 40 counties.

Putnam County was created in 1821 with land taken from early versions of Vigo and Owen counties.
