Kiwanis to mark its 95th year in Greencastle May 25

Monday, April 18, 2016

The Kiwanis Club of Greencastle invites the community to help celebrate its 95th anniversary on Wednesday, May 25.

Kiwanis was only five years old when the Greencastle club was founded in 1921.

Today, Kiwanis International is 100 years old and a worldwide organization with more than 7,200 clubs in more than 80 countries with more than 200,000 members.

Kiwanis seeks "to improve the world, one child and one community at a time."

Locally, Kiwanis awards college scholarships to two graduating Putnam County high school seniors each year. Community organizations the club supports include the Giving Tree, Mary Allison Children's Trust, Bridges Out of Poverty, Celebrate 4, United Way, Summer Enrichment Program at Gobin Methodist Church, Putnam County Youth Development Commission, Putnam County Museum, the Bike Rodeo at National Night Out (first Tuesday in August), the Reality Experience (for Putnam County eighth-graders in October) and the Putnam County Community Coalition.

Within the Kiwanis family, the club sponsors Key Clubs at Greencastle and North Putnam high schools; a Circle K at DePauw University; and the new Aktion Club at Putnam County Comprehensive Services.

The Kiwanis Room at the Putnam County Public Library is so named since the Greencastle Club provided the furnishings. It also contribute to Riley Children's Hospital and The Kiwanis Foundation.

Greencastle Kiwanis Club annual fundraisers are the Spring Fest Pancake Breakfast on the first Saturday in May (May 7 this year), the Coffee Rest Stop Donations for Riley (at the Plainfield rest area along Interstate 70) on Memorial Day and Labor Day and holiday citrus sales (November/December).

Former and current members are asked to make reservations for the lunch/meeting in the Kiwanis Room Putnam County Public Library at 11:30 a.m. by calling Jim Maxwell at 720-7625. The Indiana District and Collegiate Division will be making their presentation at noon.

The general public is invited to learn more about Kiwanis and the Greencastle club from 1-3 p.m. There will be displays of the club's accomplishments and plans for future work.

Looking for a way to make a difference? The Kiwanis Club of Greencastle meets every Thursday at the Inn at DePauw. You are welcome to eat with the club at 2 West in the Inn at DePauw at 11:45 a.m. or just attend the meeting and program from 12:30 until 1 p.m.
