CLOVERDALE -- One of the marks of a good team is the ability to battle back from a poor outing. The Cloverdale Clover girl' softball team did just that on Tuesday evening. The Clovers were beaten on Monday by the Edgewood Mustangs 10-0, but hosted the same team and this time came out on top with a 6-1 victory against the Western Indiana Conference rivals.

"We talked about coming back and trying to play better softball. We did a good job of that. We pitched a little better, we hit a little better, and we made some better plays," Cloverdale coach Jim Spencer said.

The Clovers drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning. Lauren Meek hit a well-placed RBI single scoring Kiley Shedron. The Clovers had bases loaded and no outs in the inning but managed just the one run.

"We had really hoped to get more runs early, but just couldn't get enough timely hits," Spencer said.

Edgewood tied the game up in the top of the fifth. The Mustangs might have broken the game open, but managed only one run as the Clovers turned a nifty 6-3-5 double play to get out of the inning with just one run given up.

The Clovers then did most of their damage in the bottom half of the inning. The Clovers plated four runs highlighted by a two-RBI double by Kimmy Winders. Cloverdale led 5-1 after the fifth and that was more than enough for pitcher Meek. The junior left-hander threw a one-hitter on the night, silencing the big bats from Edgewood.

"When you get to see a pitcher for the third time through the order, you hope you can do something. We got some timely hits there," Spencer said.

The Clovers added an insurance run in the sixth behind a RBI single by Kayleigh Basore.

"Our hitting was better tonight, including a key pinch hit by Kayleigh Basore," Spencer said.

Meek led the way offensively with two hits, while Winders had a double for the game.

The Clovers, now 6-3 on the season, will host WIC and county rival North Putnam on Friday evening.
