Jenny Thompson

e No. 2-ranked University of Indianapolis softball team notched a pair of wins on its annual Senior Day Saturday. The Greyhounds (now 46-3, 27-3 GLVC) started the day with a special recognition of its senior class, and went on to hand visiting Truman losses of 5-1 and 3-2, with the latter featuring a walk-off home run by Tayler Weck.

Prior to the first pitch, UIndy honored its seven senior student-athletes and their families.

South Putnam's Jenny Thompson was honored, along with teammates Cherise Boyd, Morgan Foley, Erika Goodwin, Cassie Reed, Miranda Tamayo and Coryn Tirpak. The group of seniors has combined to help the Hounds to a 190-39 record the last four years, with the resulting .830 winning percentage the highest in any four-year span in program history.

Facing the Midwest Region's eighth-ranked squad, the Greyhounds cruised to a 5-1 win in the opener against the visiting Bulldogs. Foley was unhittable for most of the game, striking out 11 versus two walks. Only one batted ball got out of the infield through the first six frames -- a lazy fly to center in the fourth.

Foley's bid for a seventh consecutive no-hitter was broken up with one out in the seventh inning when Truman sophomore Ashley Murphy got a hold of one for a home run to also end the shutout. It was too little, too late, however, as Tirpak came on in relief to quietly retire the next two batters and secure the win.

The Greyhounds scored the bulk of their runs with a four spot in the second.

UIndy put each of its first five batters on base without the benefit of a base hit, with Brooke Riess and Cassie Reed earning RBIs on a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively. Katie Kelly capped the surge with a two-run single up the middle.

For good measure, Thompson cranked her sixth home run of the year with a solo shot to left in the sixth, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs, a stolen base and a sacrifice.

On Sunday, the final date of the 2016 regular season, Foley continued a dominating senior year, shutting out Quincy University 4-0 with her fourth no-hitter of the season in the opener aided by a solo homer from Thompson. The performance kicked off a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Hawks, whom the Greyhounds also bested 12-3 in game 2.

For the season, Thompson -- the team's starting catcher -- has started all 49 games and is hitting .278 with eight doubles, one triple, seven homers and 33 RBI.

She has also scored 40 runs.

Boetjer earns Summit League POW honors again

For the fourth time in her decorated career, IUPUI senior pitcher Brooke Boetjer of South Putnam has been named the Summit League Pitcher of the Week for her efforts following a midweek doubleheader split against Wright State and a series win against IPFW earlier this month.

Over the week of April 11-17, Boetjer worked 13.2 innings, compiling a 1.02 earned run average (ERA) over the pair of matchups. Against IPFW, the Fillmore native pitched a five inning, complete game shutout in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader. She surrendered just three hits and a walk while picking up a strikeout to stifle the Mastodons' offense. On Sunday, Boetjer tossed 3.2 innings of relief, giving up no runs with just one hit and recording three strikeouts.

Against Wright State, Boetjer kept her team in contention, which eventually led to a 5-4 victory, as the right-hander went five innings while giving up just five hits and two earned runs. She walked one batter and struck out four.

On the season, Boetjer has a 7-12 record with a 3.29 ERA in 117.0 innings of work, striking out 82 and keeping batters to a .255 average against her.

She holds the all-time record at IUPUI with 21 wins in a season, set last year in what was arguably the strongest showing for the program ever.
