Derek Alexander Maze

Derek Alexander Maze passed away Thursday morning, April 28, 2016. He was 18 years old.

Derek worked with the groundskeeping crew at Rocky Ridge Golf Course in Darlington and had his own mowing business.

He was a very hard worker who was content to be on his mower or running the trimmer. He was adamant that no job was complete without the proper cleanup.

He would often enlist the help of his friends, Emmett, Jake and Tim. They were instrumental in keeping his business going while he was recovering from an injury and provided him the much-needed downtime that he rarely took.

Derek was the first to jump in and lend a hand to someone in need and especially enjoyed helping his Uncle Bill and Aunt Gina at Second Saturday when he could. He dearly loved helping take care of his "baby" cousins and playing with them. He loved his dogs and usually had one of them in his lap any time he was home.

He was a member of the Sons of American Legion.

Born Oct. 29, 1997 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, he was the son of Michael Maze and Melissa Wainman Maze.

He was a student at North Montgomery High School.

Derek's love of working outdoors and using his hands was leading him to vocational/trade programs to help him reach his end goal of having his own lawn care and landscaping business.

Survivors include his parents, Michael and Melissa Maze; sister Hayley Maze; brother Corbin Maze; paternal grandparents Ken and Carolyn Maze; maternal grandparents, Dr. Perry and Rose Wainman and Mr. and Mrs. Bud and Connie Carrico; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at the Darlington Community Center (formerly the Armory) in Darlington. There will be a service, beginning at 4 p.m., led by Pastor Joe Sanford.

Burkhart Funeral Home, Crawfordsville, was entrusted with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to one of the following: Montgomery County Animal Welfare League or mikeroweWORKS Foundation (scholarships for those pursuing trades).
