Tiger Cubs win pair; Clover golfers win huge match

Austin Judy of North Putnam sends a putt toward the cup in Wednesday's match.
Jake Buis of Greencastle tries to sink a putt in Wednesday's match against North Putnam.

The Greencastle boys' golf team continued its winning ways this week, defeating Crawfordsville and North Putnam in a triangular match on Wednesday and beating Cascade and Monrovia on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Tiger Cubs' coach Steve Paquin said his team played its best nine holes of the season.

"It was a cool, breezy night," he said. "The greens were very fast and the pins were in some difficult positions, which made putting and chipping very hard."

Jake Buis led Greencastle with a 35 to win medalist honors.

"He had an excellent round of 35, even par for the nine holes; he had two bogeys and two birdies and five pars," Paquin said. "Blaise Hasty shot a very good round of 37 seven pars, one birdie, and a double bogey."

Paquin thought the home course advantage benefited his team as light rain fell over the final few holes.

"The Cubs get to play Windy Hill daily and are used to the tough greens and hilly shots," he said. "The other players struggled with the conditions."

Buis was again Greencastle's top player on Thursday with a 38, but the match came down to the fifth man -- and Jaxon Parmley's 46 allowed the Tiger Cubs to pull out the four-stroke win.

"It was a very close match with Cascade," Paquin said. "Jake Bennett had three birdies in his round to finish with a 40. Cascade has two very good players that made this a close one."

Paquin is pleased that his team has been winning, but notes several areas the Tiger Cubs still need to work on bettering.

"We still are struggling making good decisions and making consistent shots," he said. "We continue to improve; but must adjust to the conditions and the differences in golf courses."

* Clovers win three-way meet -- Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun had been waiting for his team to break through with a strong performance, and the Clovers did just that on Thursday by edging Sullivan by four strokes and easily outdistancing Owen Valley.

"We finally broke through the setbacks and played golf," he said. "Our guys did a very good job of overcoming difficulty and converted on things we have been struggling with. We still left some strokes that we can easily clean up, but this was our best group effort of the season."

Kylar Galloway and Zach Nichols led Cloverdale with 41s, tying them for second-place medalist honors with Sullivan's Austin Bobbitt behind medalist Colton Kuppler (who had a 37).

"They both had obstacles that they overcame," Wokoun said of Galloway and Nichols. "It was a good effort by both of them, but they, along with Chase [Snyder], know that they could erase a couple of more strokes.

"Zarek [Wellington] stepped up and finally posted a score that is more in line with his ability," he added. "We can be a tough team when we get this kind of effort."

Wokoun knows his team chose the right time to get itself together.

"We hope we are finally headed to a good place," he said. "The timing couldn't be more critical, with the county and conference coming up next week."

Softball

* South Putnam 11, Sullivan 10 The Eagles trailed 10-7 going into the bottom of the sixth on Tuesday, but came up with three runs to tie the game and scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh

"This was a big win for our team," Eagles' coach Jamie Steffy said. "Sullivan is a very, very good team. We were able to battle our way back twice to take the lead and then our execution in the bottom of the 7th was outstanding."

Lillie Stein started the sixth-inning rally with a one-out walk, and Drew Bratcher followed with a single.

Katie Hewitt hit a two-run double to cut the gap to one, and later scored on a single by Logan Hawkins.

In the seventh, Makenzi Myers walked with one out, was sacrificed by second by Stein and scored on a walkoff double by Bratcher.

"Because of our team first philosophy, we don't mention individuals a lot, but I told Lillie Stein after the game that her contribution in the bottom of the seventh is a perfect example of what we have been stressing all year about playing team softball and finding ways to help the team be successful that maybe don't show up in the scorebook," Steffy said.

"Mackenzi Myers scored the run to win and Drew Bratcher had the game winning hit, but if Lillie doesn't get the sacrifice bunt down to advance Mackenzi we go from one out to two outs and the defense can now back up and play deeper."

Myers had a two-run single and Bratcher had a two-run double as the Eagles got four runs in the second. Myers also had an RBI single as part of a three-run third inning.

"I told the girls after the game this win was a direct result of playing unselfish, team softball," Steffy said. "Our communication was good, we executed relays and our outfield is doing a very good job of getting balls back in to our infield quickly to hold runners from advancing extra bases."
