Roachdale zoning rumors 'completely false'

Thursday, May 12, 2016

Zoning Ordinance 06-2016 received unanimous approval of its first reading Tuesday alongside explanations by the board in efforts to calm residents' concerns.

Having fully passed at the town's recent planning commission meeting, these zoning resolutions are being misinterpreted by many, Councilwoman Holly Cook said at Roachdale's monthly public meeting.

"There are all kinds of rumors going around," Cook said. "Don't believe what you see or hear on Facebook because I guarantee most of it is untrue."

"I think all of them are untrue," board president Zach Bowers added.

"This is simply just to protect the property owners -- it is not restrictive," Cook continued. "There are no homeowner association fees of $500."

Bowers' comments continued to echo those of Cook, adding that, as it pertains to zoning, updates will only affect any new construction taking place within city limits.

"Nobody has to change anything that they currently have," President Bowers said. "There are no structures that have to be changed or moved. Everything that's current is 'grandfathered' in to place."

Town attorney Dave Peebles added that, if a residence is deemed unsafe or is considered a nuisance or the like, owners can still be "in trouble by those separate laws."
