Greencastle's Wilson shatters two WIC marks; Brown County wins both team titles
BRAZIL - Greencastle freshman Emma Wilson demolished a pair of Western Indiana Conference distance records on Friday night during the completion of the league's first-ever 12-team meet.
Wilson won the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:01.60, beating the previous record held by South Vermillion's Julia Costello by exactly 20 seconds.
Costello had set the record in 2005.
The second-place finisher, Brown County's Corrissa Proctor, finished 34 seconds behind.
Later, Wilson eclipsed the 3,200-meter run record by more than 35 seconds.
She finished the eight laps in 11:15.08, topping the mark set by Edgewood's Karly Thornton in 2014.
Wilson beat her nearest competitor, Brooklyn Hey of Owen Valley, by more than one minute, 18 seconds.
Wilson also ran the anchor leg of Greencastle's winning 4x400 relay team, which won in a time of 4:15.38.
Also running on the relay team were Seelye Stoffregen, Corrie Romer and Rose Lemier-Maurichitch.
Samantha Atwood of Cloverdale won the pole vault with a height of 10-0 for the final Putnam County girls' crown of the night.
In the boys' event, Kieffer Vittetow of South Putnam won the boys' 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:46.29, edging out Indiana State recruit Cam Trout of Northview by 2.36 seconds.
Putnam County's other two firsts came in field events, as J.T. Matthews of Greencastle won the high jump with a leap of 6-3 and Elijah William s of Greencastle won the shot put with a toss of 45-10.5.
Brown County won the girls' team title with 154 points, beating second-place Greencastle by 37 points.
Edgewood was third with 74, followed by West Vigo with 56, Owen Valley with 46, Cascade with 44, Northview with 40, Sullivan with 32, North Putnam and Cloverdale with 20 each, South Putnam with 15 and South Vermillino with five.
The Eagles had a closer battle in the boys' competition, scoring 98 points to 85.5 for second-place Northview.
West Vigo was third with 78, while Owen Valley was fourth with 70, Edgewood was fifth with 65.5, Cascade was sixth with 52, Cloverdale was seventh with 40, South Putnam was eighth with 37, Sullivan was ninth with 32, Greencastle was 10th with 31, South Vermillion was 11th with 22.5 and North Putnam was 12th with 12.5.
