Wilson dominates distance races: Tiger Cub frosh wins two titles in sectional

Greencastle freshman Emma Wilson pulls away from Terre Haute North's Devon Zeck in the 1,600-meter run at Tuesday's girls' track sectional.

TERRE HAUTE -- Greencastle freshman Emma Wilson entered Tuesday's Terre Haute North girls' sectional meet with the best seeded time in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, with an advantages of five and 52 seconds, respectively, over her next closest rival.

The actual races on a rainy, chilly night weren't nearly that close.

Wilson won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:02.31, finishing 15.62 seconds ahead of runnerup Devon Zeck of Terre Haute North.

"The race went pretty well," Wilson said of her shortest jaunt of the night. "I actually like this kind of weather better than the heat. I wear spikes, so it wasn't slippery or anything."

Greencastle coach Garry Anderson noted that Wilson's time was 5:01 in the conference meet last Friday, and felt the weather could have had an effect on the evening.

"It was drier last week," he said. "That mentally affects the kids, and the temperature is dropping.

"She's a tough kid and did a fine job," Anderson added. "She works like a dog, and she's pretty tough. She has a good shot now to make it to the 'big house' if she races well next weekend."

The 3,200-meter race was much more of a mismatch, as Wilson broke out quickly and finished with a time of 10:53.13 -- more than 67 seconds faster than Hannah Bunch of Terre Haute North -- while lapping several competitors along the way.

Fifteen of the 16 events were completed on Tuesday evening, with the pole vault to be finished today due to safety concerns over the wet vaulting area.

Greencastle stands in second place pending the outcome of the pole vault with 118 points, just one point behind leader Terre Haute South, but cannot score any more points and will finish second or third.

Terre Haute North's streak of 14 consecutive titles will come to an end, and with Indiana State-bound Josie Rakes among the four competitors left the Patriots will claim second with a first- or second-place finish from her.

Cloverdale's Sam Atwood is also among the final four competitors in the competition, which will be finished this afternoon.

Putnam County had five sectional champions who all have something in common -- they are all freshmen.

Besides Wilson, the Tiger Cubs got a first from Aubrey Barker in the high jump at 5-0 and another from Jana Amis in the shot put at 33-4.

North Putnam's Emily Gasho took first in the discus at 99-0.

"That was about an average distance for her," NP girls' coach Kevin Lutes said. "She has had a couple where she threw 104 or 105, been right in that range. She was not too happy with her first two throws."

Gasho committed a foul on her first throw and her second was only 68-5.

"She's just a freshman. I had a talk with her about how it's a big meet and she needed to get her nerves under control," Lutes said. "After that, she seemed to relax a lot more and was able to throw well.

"It seemed like overall the distances were shorter," he added. "Not being able to hold onto the disc as well, and the ring was a little slippery, but it was the same for everybody. We are very excited about her win."

The top three finishers in each event advance to Tuesday's regional at Bloomington North.

Others in that group from Greencastle will be:

* Seelye Stoffregen -- another freshman -- who placed second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles;

* Rose Lemier-Maurichitch, who was third in the 100 and the 200;

* Allison White, who was second in the high jump;

* Barker, who also placed third in the long jump; and

* Both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, which each came in second.

From Cloverdale:

* Paige Plamondon, who was third in the 100 hurdles; and

* Chelsea Edwards, who was second in the 400.
