County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 11:24 p.m. on Tuesday, Dipenbahi Patel, 32, Cloverdale, was housed at the jail on an out-of-county warrant.

* At 7:52 p.m. on Wednesday, Dennis Lee Kent, 39, Cloverdale, was arrested on a warrant.

* At 7:58 p.m. on Thursday, Edward Ray Reeves, 20, Greencastle, was charged with theft.

At 10:55 p.m. Charles Counterman, 45, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail for driving while intoxicated.

* At 1:51 a.m. on Friday, Grant Anthony Skipper, 21, Annadale, Va., was booked in for driving while intoxicated.

City Police

A hit-and-run accident has resulted in the arrest of a 52-year-old Greencastle man.

* At 1:57 a.m. Tuesday, Bruce Mendenhall was arrested at a Judson Court residence after he allegedly fled the scene of an accident in the 1000 block of Deer Field Drive, Officer Matt Huffman reported.

He was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and failure to stop after an accident. Mendenhall registered a .221 percent blood-alcohol content upon testing after the incident in which his 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix struck a pair of parked vehicles.

Damaged in the hit-and-run accident were a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, owned by Bethany Bax, Greencastle, and a 2006 Toyota Scion, owned by Mark Girton, Reelsville.

Total damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000 by Officer Huffman, who was assisted at the scene by Officer Elsiana Crosby.

Mendenhall reportedly fled the scene on foot after sideswiping the two parked vehicles.

One additional recent arrest was reported by City Police.

* At 8:57 p.m. Wednesday, Joshua Mitchell, 20, Greencastle, was arrested by Sgt. Eric Vaughan on charges of possession of a synthetic drug, possession of paraphernalia and a probation violation.

The arrest came after a citizen a call about a possible unconscious person on the portion of the People Pathway behind Sherwood Christian Church.

Initially taken to Putnam County Hospital, Mitchell was later booked in at the Putnam County Jail.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County sheriff's deputies responded to three recent property-damage accidents.

* At 11:16 p.m. on Tuesday, Bradford J. Linker, 23, Cloverdale, was southbound on County Road 275 East, approaching County Road 350 South in a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Linker lost control approaching a bend in the road, hitting a fence on the west side. He told Deputy Matt Biggs he was driving too fast when he lost control.

The truck sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed. Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 5:58 a.m. on Thursday, May 12, Donald R. Evans, 33, Greencastle, was eastbound on West Walnut Street in a 2005 Dodge Caravan.

The van crossed the westbound lane and left the north side of the road, hitting a mailbox. It then continued east and came to rest in the westbound lane.

Evans told Reserve Deputy Rick Lambert he felt dizzy prior to the crash. However, he declined medical attention.

Deputy Virgil Lanning assisted with the investigation.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 7:25 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, Timothy Hynds, 26, Indianapolis, was westbound on U.S. 36 near the 31-mile marker in a 2007 Ford ZX3.

Hynds told Deputy Scott Ducker he lost control of the vehicle on a right hand curve, hitting a guardrail on the south side and spinning out of control.

Hynds said he then drove the vehicle off the side of the road, locked it up and called someone for a ride home without reporting the accident to law enforcement.

Ducker reported that the impact decimated one of the guardrail posts and sheared the front bumper off the vehicle.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

Hynds was charged with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to one dispatch, one medical assist and one lift assist.

* At 12:42 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 208 E. Olive St. GFD subsequently reset the alarm and returned to station at 12:55 a.m.

* At 8:53 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cleaning (dust was found in the smoke alarm's detector head) at 208 E. Olive St. GFD subsequently reset the alarm and returned to station at 9:03 a.m.
