Space Week at DePauw to run June 5 to 13

DePauw University will be hosting Space Week from Monday, June 6 to Monday, June 13.

Throughout the week, visitors can view NASA artifacts, a meteoriate collection and memorabilia from "Kids of the 1960s" in display cases on the first floor of the Percy L. Julian Science and Mathematics Center, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.The Prevo Science Library -- open Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 11 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. -- will house a NASA timeline along with more artifacts.

On Monday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m., a Space Movie Night featuring "Apollo 13" will be shown in the Julian Auditorium.

On Tuesday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m., another Space Movie Night will feature "The Martian."

On Wednesday, June 8 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Professor of Physics and Astronomy Mary Kertzman will conduct three 20-minute shows in the Star Lab, which will be set up in Room 039 in the basement of the Julian Center. Shows are appropriate for all ages, but patrons must be able to crawl into the Star Lab and sit cross-legged on the floor.

That same day from 10 to 11 p.m. Professor Kertzman will also conduct a Solar System Extravaganza at the McKim Observatory on DePauw Avenue. Weater permitting, attendees will be able to see Jupiter, Saturn and Mars.

On Thursday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the second floor of the Julian Center will host Space Labs where participants can enjoy paintball cratering; a virtual reality sandbox; a simulation of Mars' terrain and Intellibots traversing it and other activities.

On Friday, June 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Julian Center, Crawfordsville native, DePauw alumnus, retired NASA astronaut and Professor of Physics Joseph P. Allen IV will talk about his experiences as an astronaut. Professor Allen was a crew member on the Columbia Space Shuttle (1982) and a mission specialist on the Discovery Orbiter (1984). He was inducted into the NASA Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2005.
