Buis two strokes shy of finals trip

WASHINGTON -- Greencastle and North Putnam concluded their boys' golf seasons on Thursday by tying for 11th place in the Washington Regional played at the Country Oaks Golf Course.

Greencastle had 14 penalty strokes and numerous three putts during the round, which coach Steve Paquin said contributed to its 329 score.

Jonah Stevens of Greencastle gets ready to rip a drive in the Washington Regional on Thursday.

Jake Buis had the best round for the Tiger Cubs with a 76, two strokes short of making the cut.

"He was one over par going into the last two holes, but could not par those last two holes," Paquin said. "We put a good effort, but came up short to qualify for the state."

Paquin was pleased with his team's season, and looks forward to having three of this year's tourney participants back again next spring.

"The Cubs had a very good year winning the county and sectional and going to their fifth consecutive regional," he said. "We will miss our two seniors [Buis and Jonah Stevens] and hope they continue their successes in college."

Stevens had an 84 on Thursday.

Returning for the Cubs next year will be Jake Bennett (85), Blaise Hasty (84) and Jaxon Parmley (92).

"They will form the nucleus for the next few years," Paquin said. "This was a very productive and fun year for the boys golf program."

North Putnam coach Shawn Alspaugh was "pretty happy" with his team's regional effort, noting that the Cougars' 329 was their best 18-hole score of the year.

Jake Holtze sinks a short putt in the Washington Regional on Thursday.

"I was especially proud of my two seniors," he said. "[Austin] Judy and Jake [Holtze] both played some very high quality golf [both shooting 76s].

"Austin played by far his best golf of the year, but once again just couldn't make any putts," Alspaugh said. "I think he only had one birdie, but had countless opportunities."

Holtze's 76 was his career best.

Jaxon Parmley tries to sink a long putt in the Washington Regional on Thursday.

"We finally got him to putt well during a round, and it showed in his final score," Alspaugh said. "It was so good to see him go out with a smile after playing some quality golf.

"The two of them have been integral parts of NP golf the past four years, and did things that haven't been done at the school before, and should be very proud.

Logan Grim had an 87 and Preston Porter added a 90 for the Cougars.

"They both did some positive things as well, but they just couldn't avoid the periodic big holes," Alspaugh said. "They both got more pars than usual, but just had too many doubles and triples."

Marcus Burdine completed the Cougar lineup with a 134, and Alspaugh was pleased with his improvement.

"Marcus played his best golf of the year," Alspaugh said. "It didn't show in his final number due to one really bad hole, but he improved.

"All in all, it was a nice round to finish on," he added. "We were able to get some revenge on a few teams that beaten us earlier in the season (finishing ahead of Terre Haute North and Seeger and tying Greencastle)."

Evansville North won the team title with a 301. Among those advancing to the state finals as individuals were Garrett Compliment of Cascade (second overall), Zach Hall of Linton and Will Martin of North Vermillion.
