Road closed signs remain in place, but State Road 240 east of Greencastle has reopened.

Contractor Duncan Robertson Inc. reopened the road Wednesday evening, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced Thursday morning.

Even with signs still in place, barricades approaching the bridge were taken down or gone as of Thursday morning.

A number of motorists were crossing the bridge both eastbound and westbound, having discovered the reopened road before the official announcement.

The June 15 reopening is six weeks ahead of the planned July 31 reopingn.

The road had been closed since April for a $341,882 bridge project over Deer Creek at Chadd Valley.

  • The re-opening may be ahead of schedule but it was still too long for this small job. $342K and 2 1/2 months of detours is a bit extreme. INDOT needs to streamline a few things.
