Sheriff's Department

A Terre Haute woman was ticketed Saturday after she allowed her unlicensed daughter to drive in a parking lot at Lieber State Recreation Area, causing a three-vehicle accident.

At 3:50 p.m. Capt. Tom Helmer and Deputy Scott Ducker responded to the crash in the parking lot at the Lieber aquatic center.

Amy Marie Ornuff, Terre Haute, told the deputies that when she and her daughters returned to their 2012 Dodge Journey, they found a car parked too close to the driver's side for Ornuff to enter.

She then asked her daughter, Elizabeth R. Ornuff, 18, Terre Haute, to move the car a few feet so she could get in. Elizabeth does not have a license.

Elizabeth and her younger sister got into the car. She moved the car forward a few feet but when she tried to apply the brakes, she instead hit the accelerator.

The vehicle then sped across the parking lot. It first sideswiped a 2004 Buick Rendezvous registered to Christy L. Kegebein of Gosport.

Thereafter, Ornuff's vehicle made front impact with the rear of a 2016 Chevrolet Spark registered to Cassandra Felix of Reelsville. The impact spun the car around nearly 360 degrees.

Ornuff's vehicle continued northwest, leaving the parking lot and coming to rest against a tree.

No one was injured. Amy Ornuff was cited for permitting an unauthorized person to drive.

The Felix vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

Lieber security officer Gerry Hoffa assisted at the scene.

Sheriff's deputies responded to three other recent property-damage crashes.

* At 7:20 p.m. on Monday, Jonathon R. Gilbrech, 17, Clayton, was on County Road 300 South attempting to turn northbound onto U.S. 231 in a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. Judy D. Ritchey, 62, Michigan City, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado.

As Gilbrech started his turn, his car hit the side of Ritchey's truck.

Gilbrech's vehicle was towed. Deputy Jacob Harrington estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Tiffany L. Monnett, 33, Brazil, was northbound on U.S. 231, attempting to turn left into Chicago's Pizza in Cloverdale in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. Kelli J. Tipton, 29, Amo, was also northbound in a 2007 Pontiac Vibe.

Tipton told Deputy Kyle Gibbons she did not see Monnett's vehicle stopped and rear-ended her pickup truck. Monnett's pickup suffered minor damage to the right rear. Tipton's vehicle suffered significant front-end damage.

Tipton's vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 2:11 a.m. on Sunday, Mark A. Fox, 44, Reelsville, was southbound on County Road 375 West in a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado.

Deputy Gibbons reported that Fox fell asleep and ran into a tree.
