ParkFest to feature three local acts this evening

Monday, July 4, 2016

A first-time ParkFest act will join a pair of veteran acts to the weekly summer music festival this evening in Robe-Ann Park.

The Bob Flanigan Bandshell will be graced by festival staples Covered Bridge Harmony and The Fret Set as well as newcomers The Syds.

The show will run from 6:30-8 p.m. The event will also feature food for sale from Anthony's New York Style Pizzeria.

Covered Bridge Harmony, a woman's a cappella singing group was founded in January 2003. The group is part of Area 4 in Harmony Inc., an international organization for women barbershoppers.

The chorus has competed in many area contests and were the area champions in 2010. Last month they qualified to compete at the international competition in November.

Covered Bridge presents shows locally as well as performing from Terre Haute to Indianapolis.

Perhaps the group's biggest excitement came when it was asked to sing the National Anthem before the Colt's game on Dec. 31, 2006. Their greatest honor was being asked to sing at a reunion of survivors from the USS Indianapolis.

Covered Bridge Harmony also has great fun singing for the residents at the local nursing homes throughout the year.

Currently the membership includes director Sara Stone, Kathryn Dory, Beth Montgomery, Shirley Richards, Linda Schroeder, Debbie Lambert, Susan Griffith, Jodi Leach, Anita Edenfield, Kelly Genotte, Glenda Edwards, Roseanne Jensen, Denise Thede, Kathy Custis, Phyllis Smith, Skip Sutton, Sara Strain, Alice Howard, Elenore Howard, Karen Smoger and Karen Weaver.

The Fret Set Band is a group of friends who enjoy making old-time music and sharing it with others. The songs include traditional and contemporary folk music.

All the band members play multiple instruments.

No information was provided about The Syds.

Just one show remains in the 2016 ParkFest lineup, with Ryan Young, Mongrel Dogs and Saturday Shoes set to perform on Tuesday, July 12.
