CLOVERDALE -- In retiring from Tri-County Bank and Trust recently, Jim Jackson didn't want anyone to make a fuss.

No party for Jackson. No awards either. Jackson was simply ready to retire after 20 years with the Roachdale bank.

So Jackson's friends had to get a little sneaky when they wanted to honor him for his years of service not only to the bank, but to the community through endeavors such as the more than 10 years he's spent as the president of the board for the Mary Allison Children's Trust.

The plan came together Friday afternoon at Clover Meadows Golf course prior to the annual golf outing for the children's trust.

Retired State Rep. Susan Crosby of Roachdale used the gathered crowd to give some public recognition to Jackson.

"Jim has retired from Tri-County Bank and we thought this would be a fitting time to publicly thank him for all the years he has been involved in this wonderful program that serves so many needy children," Crosby said.

With that, Crosby was joined by golfing partners Susan Price, Gail Smith and Debbie Winger in serving cupcakes in Jackson's honor.

"For years we four women have participated in this wonderful event at the urging and encouragement of Jim Jackson," Crosby said, "and if you have ever seen us golf you know it is not because of our skills. But it has been because this is such a worthy cause for our community and we want to show our support."

There was more to the presentation than the sweet treats, though. Speaking on behalf of her former colleague Indiana General Assembly, Crosby presented Jackson with an award of recognition for outstanding community service from Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson.

Crosby pointed out that although she and Lawson came from different chambers of the legislature, different political parties and different counties, they still found some common ground as legislators, mainly their desire to serve their constituents by working with local leaders such as Jackson.

"The best way we found we could (serve the citizens) was by working with local leaders to obtain the vision they had for their communities," Crosby said. "Today Secretary Lawson continues to work with and recognize community leaders.

"So today she has asked me to make this presentation for her to Jim Jackson."

The award states that "Jim Jackson has rendered exemplary service unto the citizens of Putnam County, in consequence whereof the people are grateful beneficiaries."

A resident of the Morton area and Greencastle High School graduate, Jackson retired from Tri-County in June as trust officer and vice president.
