Sheriff's Department

Putnam County sheriff's deputies responded to seven recent property-damage crashes.

* A Sunday afternoon collision of two motorcycles in Floyd Township sent three Putnam County residents to Indianapolis-area hospitals.

At 2:07 p.m. Jeffrey R. Skinner, 58, Fillmore, was stopped westbound on County Road 500 North on a 1995 Honda VF750F. He told Deputy Virgil Lanning he was stopped talking to another motorist, believing her vehicle to be broken down.

Jacob N. Skinner, 33, Greencastle, was also westbound on 500 North on a 2003 Suzuki GSXR-750.

As Jacob Skinner crested a hill approaching the spot where the other vehicles were stopped, Jeffrey Skinner was starting to pull back onto the road. Jacob Skinner told Lanning he braked hard but could not avoid sideswiping Jeffrey Skinner.

Jeffrey Skinner was ejected form his cycle but was able to crawl to the side of the road. He was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, for a lower leg injury.

Jacob Skinner said that after the collision he steered twoard the ditch to avoid crashing on asphalt. When he hit the ditch, he and his passenger, Courtney R. Mitchell, 22, Greencastle, were ejected.

Mitchell was airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis, for a neck injury. Jacob Skinner was taken to Hendricks Regional Hospital by ambulance with a lower leg injury.

None of the participants were wearing helmets.

Jacob Skinner admitted to only having a motorcycle learner's permit, which requires a helmet and does not allow for passengers. He also admitted that the bike was not registered. Lanning cited him for both violations.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. Both cycles were towed.

* At 5:08 a.m. on Sunday, Christyan X. Trent-Proctor, 17, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 500 North in a 1995 Dodge Dakota.

Trent-Proctor told Deputy Mike Downing a vehicle crossed the center line, causing him to veer to the left and leave the north side of the road, striking several fence posts before returning to the road.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 12:07 p.m. on Saturday, William H. Perkins, 89, Roachdale, was eastbound on State Road 236 in a 1998 Chevrolet van. He told Reserve Deputy Rick Lambert he was distracted by a pickup pulling a trailer loaded with large hay bales in the oncoming lane.

Perkins did not notice the 1995 Chevrolet Silverado driven eastbound by Max. A. Pickel, 15, Roachdale. Pickel was attempting to turn right into his driveway when he was rear-ended by Perkins.

Both vehicles left the road, with Perkins' van coming to rest on an embankment. Pickel's truck spun approximately 180 degrees and came to rest on the same embankment.

Perkins was evaluated by medical personnel but refused treatment. He was taken to the hospital by family members.

Pickel was not injured but his father Max Pickel sustained minor injuries, declining treatment.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

Hutcheson told Deputy Ducker she tried to pull out but had to stop due to northbound traffic, leaving her vehicle across both southbound lanes. She said her view was obstructed when she pulled out.

Neudeck was approaching in the turn lane and could not stop in time to avoid Hutcheson's van.

Hutcheson was cited for driving with a suspended license.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, David E. Bumgardner, 29, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 300 South approaching Manhattan road in a 2006 Freightliner dump truck registered to the Putnam County Highway Department.

Bumgardner told Deputy Jeffrey Freeman he saw a vehicle in his lane and tried to move his truck to the side of the road to avoid a collision. In doing so, his brakes locked up and put him in the ditch, where he collided with trees and brush.

Bumgardner was able to correct his path and regain control but not before significantly damaging the passenger door and exhaust stack.
