Prisoner assaulted, killed at Putnamville Correctional Facility

PUTNAMVILLE -- The assault and subsequent death of an offender had Putnamville Correctional Facility on lockdown Wednesday morning as Indiana State Police worked with Putnamville officials to investigate the incident.

Lawrence Harris, 53, Indianapolis, had been at Putnamville serving a six-year term for burglary out of Marion County.

At 5:49 a.m., a radio call was made within the facility for assistance due to an offender assault in the general population dorm. Emergency medical services was called.

The incident is pending investigation with the Indiana State Police, who have identified two primary suspects believed responsible for the death of Offender Harris. The suspects' names will not be released until they are formally charged.

The suspects have been isolated from the general prison population for their safety and the safety of other offenders, according to a statement from the facility.

An autopsy of the victim will be performed to determine the official cause of death.

Formal charges are anticipated through the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office.

Harris was born on Oct. 6, 1962 in Indianapolis. He was received by Indiana Department of Correction at the Reception Dialogistic Center on Jan. 4, 2013.

He was released to Marion County Parole on May 23 of this year, but was transferred back to Reception Diagnstic Center for a parole violation on May 31.

Harris had just arrived at Putnamville on July 6, with an earliest possible release date of April 14, 2017.
