Brazil Band continues bicentennial celebration

BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, directed by Matthew S. Huber, presents Hoosier Band: With Bravura and Bombastoon on Sunday, July 24, beginning at 8 p.m. at Forest Park rain or clear.

The Brazil Band continues the Indiana bicentennial with Hoosier composer Charles Duble of Jeffersonville and his "Bravura," Indianapolis composer O.R. Farrar's "Bombasto" and "Indiana State Band" and Fred Jewell's "El Campo."

The traveling preacher Billy Sunday had headquarters in northern Indiana and preached throughout the Midwest including the Wabash Valley.

Henry Fillmore wrote a medley of church hymns utilized by Sunday titled "Billy Sunday's Successful Songs" which will be performed this week.

Fans of Dixieland jazz will think they are on Bourbon Street with "Dixieland Clambake" by John Warrington with "San," "Tin Roof Blues" and "Floatin' Down To Cotton Town."

Popularized by the Bo Derek movie "10," the BCB will play "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel.

The Broadway medley of the week is "Annie," arranged by John Higgins including "Tomorrow," "It's The Hard Knock Life" and "I Don't Need Anything But You."

"American Civil War Fantasy" includes many of the songs of the War Between the States in Jerry Bilik's classic work for band.

John Philip Sousa and his band performed in Indiana many times over a 40-year period. While director of the U.S. Marine Band, Sousa performed his march "The Thunderer" during the inauguration parade of President Benjamin Harrison of Indiana.
