Young Eagle spikers fall to CC

Clay City took control early in the first game and easily defeated South Putnam 25-5, 25-16 and 25-7 on Thursday night in girls' high school volleyball action.

South Putnam got the first point of the night, but Clay City ran off the next six straight behind the serving of Kara Rendant.

After another Eagle point, Madelyn Ames took over the serving spot and helped the Eels increase their lead to 10-3.

The Eels got the serve back at 13-5, after a few exchanges of points, and Lisa Taney served the rest of the points to record the easy victory.

In the second game, the Eels got off to a 9-1 lead before the Eagles fought back. South Putnam cut the lead to 13-7 and 14-9 and remained close at 21-15 and 22-16 before a point on a sideout and two serves by Kyndall Boyll sewed the game up.

In the final game, the Eels had a 6-3 lead when Addie Kittle stepped into the serving spot and reeled off nine in a row following a sideout to make it 16-3.

Clay City was not challenged the remainder of the game.

Miranda Bieghler had seven assists and one service ace for the Eagles, while Caitlin Capps had four kills, Lillie Stein had two kills and Sabrina Phillips added three digs.

The young Eagles, with just two senior players, fell to 0-2 on the season.

"It's still early in the season," South Putnam coach Rachelle Custis said. "We'll use this match to motivate us to push ourselves even harder."

Kittle had 11 kills, two aces and five digs for the Eels, while Lisa Taney added 12 assists, Avalee Jeffers had three blocks, Kyndall Boyll had six kills and two blocks, Lindsey Steiner had two aces and five digs, Rendant had two aces and five digs and Madelyn Ames had two aces.

The Eagles will host a five-team round robin tournament on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. with North Central, North Vermillion, South Vermillion and Turkey Run.
