Friday, August 19, 2016

The Area 30 School Board has approved submitting an application for the Department of Education Rural Grant.

Director Lora Busch, recently returned from medical leave, said that Area 30 would use the funds for teacher training in computer programming, app development, digital imaging and 3-D modeling; new computers and other equipment for the arts, AV technology and communications, and advanced manufacturing programs; and miscellaneous purchases for the civil engineering, architecture, and summer programs.

This would be the third year of funding for Area 30, having contributed to automotive and law enforcement programs in the past.

In other developments:

-- Busch reported that Area 30 will have a "Welcome to College Night" Aug. 31 to help students navigate financial aid and other college enrollment issues.

-- Assistant Chad Nunley reported that enrollment sat at 362 students as of Aug. 9, just 38 students shy of the 400-student goal.

--The board approved the handbooks for certified and non-certified staff and students. Nunley said that the most notable change was the addition of a gang policy.

-- The board approved the hire of Kelly Nichols as a part-time cafeteria employee, which is a replacement position.

-- The board presented Dawn Puckett with a bouquet of flowers to commemorate her last board meeting.

"We wish you the best," Busch said, "and we will miss you a lot."

The next Area 30 School Board meeting will be Sept. 13 at 9 a.m.
