Crown Street Music Festival to feature five acts Sunday
The annual Crown Street Music Festival is back at its neighborhood roots and ready to make Sunday swing again.
The Family and Youth Community Development Program (FYCDP) will be host its annual Crown Street Music Festival fundraiser on Sept. 4, the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, with five groups performing in a show that begins at 1 p.m.
The festival is again returning to the Crown Street location, 605 S. Crown St., Greencastle, after it was staged last year as part of Airport Appreciation Days in 2014.
The schedule includes the local group Rockology kicking things off at 1 o'clock, followed at 2 p.m. by the Steve St. Pierre and Jonathan January-led group Blues Side Up.
At 3 p.m. the group Gravel Road -- a blues band from Indianapolis featuring Alex Puga.-- will take the stage, followed at 4 by the Joel and Tosh Everson-fronted local group War Radio.
Closing the show with a 5 p.m. set will be the group Convergence, a Crown Street Music Fest staple led by Greencastle's Harry Maginity.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. People interested in advance tickets can e-mail hersh@depauw.edu or call 720-9461.
Proceeds are going to funding a year-long robotics program for fifth-graders.
Those who have attended in the past are certainly already aware of what a special community event this has become. Hundreds of people will gather in the spacious yard behind the community center to listen to local musicians perform.
The concert lasts all afternoon, and is accompanied by local food and drinks for sale. Food provided by Wasser Brewery will be available for sale with the Inn at DePauw operating the beer and wine garden. The event is a non-smoking show.
All funds raised during the Crown Street Music Festival will go directly to programming and building renovations. This year plans include offering a version of Camp Invention that runs throughout the academic year. A number of DePauw University students are reportedly eager to serve as counselors and instructors for the program, but the purchase of materials and the curriculum is needed.
Thanks to a grant from the Putnam County Community Foundation, the FYCDP has recently replaced the roof at the center, but there is still much to be done at the site.
Work remaining includes: Restroom upgrades, $2,000; technology, $750; furniture, $1,500; electrical work, $250; and new cabinets and countertop, $3,500.
