Final nine holes yet to be played; NP's Dixon seventh

CLAYTON -- The start of the Western Indiana Conference girls' golf tournament was delayed on Saturday at Deer Creek due to rain, and the event only completed half of the scheduled 18 holes.

The tourney will be finished on Wednesday, with the starting time yet to be determined.

"The course played very tough Saturday after the rain," Cloverdale coach Matthew Langdon said. "There were a lot of high scores across the board, so I was happy with how our girls played. We still managed to get 4 scores in the 50s."

Langdon noted some of his players at still in position to earn all-conference honors.

"We have girls in that position if they play well Wednesday," he said. "Team wise, Edgewood posted a good number [202], but after that there are many teams right there together."

North Putnam's Taylor Dixon was the top Putnam County scorer through nine holes with a 49, placing her seventh overall.

Golfers surpassing her score were Edgewood's Megan Higgins with a 38, Brown County's Emma Bawinkle with a 43 and Northview's Shay Ehrlich, Indian Creek's Lauren Parsley, Cascade's Dixie Short and Sullivan's McKenzie Pirtle with 46s.

Cross country

* Wilsons pace Tiger Cubs on opening day -- At Lafayette, Greencastle finally made its season debut after weather had canceled all previous scheduled events.

Emma Wilson won the girls' race in 19:59.06, while teammates/sisters Sydney Kallem (22:08.14) and Shelby Kallem (22:14.86) finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

"This was a great start for our season," co-head coach Craig Jordan said. "I was impressed with the conservative approach our athletes took as it paid off big time as the majority of our runners were able to move up nicely throughout the race. Coach Jedele and I are excited to see what they'll do in the upcoming weeks."

Co-coach Jedele shared Jordan's optimism.

"It was good to finally get our athletes out on the field," he said. "We saw a lot of great performances despite the harsh conditions. Based on what we saw we are looking forward to a great season."

* Eagles compete in Hokum Karem -- At Danville, South Putnam competed on Saturday in an unconventional event where athletes are paired off on teams and alternate running one-mile splits until both runners have gone three miles.

The Eagles had only two pairings in the girls' race, and needed three to be in the team competition.

The team of Maddie McHugh and Ally Nichols finished 16th, while the team of Samara Young and Rachel Jones finished 34th.

"I don't think we ran as fast as we are capable of running," SP coach Brandon Welti said. "I know the girls were going up against some strong competition, which could have caused them to get a bit overwhelmed and start too hard. This may be the biggest reason for the slower last few miles."

Welti added that the McHugh-Nichols team was second-best among Western Indiana Conference schools at the event.

"When you consider some of the schools the girls were going up against, it's still impressive to see that they were finishing as high as they did," he said. "Only had one conference school [Edgewood] place a pair higher than our number one group.

"I would like to think that most days, our girls would be able to compete with their top pair."

The Eagles had five pairings and placed sixth among 18 schools.

"Their finish was is better than I expected going into the meet," Welti said. "The guys had a pretty good meet, and I think part of that was because of the rough weather.

"These guys actually enjoy competing in the rain," he added. "It doesn't give us much help with running fast times, but it does help in the sense that mentally, they can handle adverse conditions."

Seniors Logan Vandermark and Kieffer Vittetow made up the first pairing, and accomplished a goal they had been striving for all summer long.

"This was a meet they had been looking forward to, and their goal for the past few years had always been to finish in the top 10," Welti said, noting they managed to do that with a seventh-place finish among the 81 pairings. "Both were running against some really strong runners, so they had no choice but to go hard from the start."

Welti said their challenge was to maintain their effort and hold on to their spot in the top 10.

"We knew Kieffer would be OK with this, and he managed to continue his consistency of performing at a high level," Welti said. "Logan was determined to hold their position, and he knew how difficult this would be. He was up to the challenge, and he ran a great race and really battled to hold on to their position and finish in the top-10 and meet their goal. I'm really pleased with their performance."

The team of Michael Crossman-Austin Rumley finished 25th, while Karl Egold-Eric Hinkle placed 45th.

"Michael is the lone junior in this group, and the others are freshmen or sophomores," Welti noted. "There isn't a great deal of experience among them, so to compete this well against this kind of competition is good to see."

The Eagles will next be competing in the Cougar Coed at North Putnam on Tuesday.
