Young Clovers fall to Bloomfield in three games

Cloverdale's Kenzie Stoltz hits a return against Bloomfield.

BLOOMFIELD -- The Bloomfield volleyball team has not had much fun the last couple weeks as they have suffered through a 6-match losing skid.

Monday night they had a lot of fun.

Especially hitters Harlee Sullivan and Malea Toon.

The duo combined for 26 kills, led by Sullivan's 15, in a 25-19, 25-12 and 25-9 win over visiting Cloverdale inside Guy Glover Gymnasium.

After her third kill in the first game, on a well placed toss to the corner, gave the Cardinals a sideout, Toon stepped back to the service line.

She proceeded with four aces during a 10-point streak which extended the Cardinals lead to 14-2.

The spurt did not sit well with Cloverdale coach Kathy Moore.

"I thought we were real flat when we walked out onto the floor tonight," the Lady Clovers' coach said. "No one was talking to anyone, just a real lack of enthusiasm. Then the next thing I know I am looking up at the scoreboard and we are down 10-12 points."

But Cloverdale did respond.

After falling behind 21-7, Tori Combs recorded a trio of kills and a pair of blocks during a 9-1 spurt.

But Sullivan closed out the first set with two kills in the final four points for the Lady Cards.

"I thought we had a good comeback in the first and were on the right road," the Clovers coach said. "We played a heck of a match last Thursday [a win over West Vigo] and I was hoping we would be able to sustain that.

"But this is a young crew, and sometimes when you are this young learning how to be consistent and playing hard through the entire match is something which needs to be learned. That's one of those things we have to work on."

Cloverdale stayed close to the Cardinals during the early part of the second set, but three straight kills by Sullivan gave Bloomfield an 11-6 edge and they never looked back -- in the set or the rest of the match.

Justyce Monnett paced Cloverdale (1-5) with 10 kills, while Tori Combs added six kills and seven blocks in the loss. Payten Simpson led with eight points from the service line.
