WVFCA, colleges join to fight childhood cancer
Throughout the month of September, member schools in the Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association -- along with Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman, DePauw University and Franklin College -- will join together to help the fight against childhood cancer.
Participating schools will flood Friday nights with gold shoestrings to be worn by every player.
Tonight, games where players will be wearing the shoestrings are North Putnam at South Putnam, Terre Haute North at Terre Haute South and Riverton Parke at South Vermillion.
On Saturday, players in the Butler at Indiana State game will also be participating.
Along with gold shoestrings, participating schools will be selling gold t-shirts in order to support children who find themselves in the fight of their lives against this horrific disease.
Each year more than 12,500 children will be diagnosed with some form of cancer, statistics show, and right now about 25 percent of those patients will not survive.
"Through the sales of the Gold T-Shirts and the passing of the Riley Red Buckets, the goal of the WVFCA is to raise over $20,000 to present to the 'PS We Love You' fund at Riley Hospital for Children's Foundation," said Greg Barrett, head coach at North Putnam and president of the WVFCA.
Childhood cancer recently touched coach Barrett and his wife Molly with the passing of their son, Patrick Stephen Barrett, this past spring.
The Barretts have started the "PS We Love You" fund to raise funds and awareness of this dreadful disease. Funds raised will assist in providing individualized treatment recommendations for children with aggressive cancers, coach Barrett said.
