COLLEGE REPORT: Betting you didn't spend your Labor Day weekend this way

Today marks the debut of the College Report for the 2016-17 school year.

This endeavor has received good reviews in every forum where it has been presented, and does a good job of comprehensively remembering athletes who have gone on to compete collegiately that previously may have been forgotten.

While the list below contains all of the fall sports athletes from a few dozen Wabash Valley schools, the weekly updates in the Banner Graphic will focus exclusively on Putnam County grads.

When trying to decide whether to include all of the other schools or not in this list, I have chosen to keep them due to the vast network that athletes develop within their sports.

Many local athletes have competed against some of the other Valley athletes listed below, or possibly even with them on various travel teams or in competitive tourney competition.

The list below was created through a combination of lists from the last school year, a separate list of signings from all of the schools below and by scouring literally hundreds of collegiate websites.

Do I think this list contains 100 percent of the athletes from these schools who are competing collegiately? I would say there is no chance.

There is a limit to how far and wide I search for names. Since a great majority of Indiana kids compete for colleges in the Hoosier state, I go through websites for every school in our state that offers the six sports listed below.

I feel confident I didn't miss anyone at the Indiana schools, but it's not impossible.

The most likely people to be missing are ones who go to smaller schools out of state.

We have athletes at rarely-appearing schools such as Wilmington, Defiance and Bluffton in Ohio and Concordia, North Central and Dominican in Illinois, but to be honest I didn't go through websites for every college in those states or any other.

I know my North Putnam list is likely to be lacking in many sports. When I did this column for the Terre Haute newspaper, the Cougars were not considered a part of our coverage area so I have not followed them over the years.

I hope Cougar parents, coaches and fans will bring me up to date if I'm missing anybody.

I am in the process of creating a "Google alert" for all of the names listed below, so any new mention of them online will show up (hopefully) in my e-mail every morning.

If you know of someone who should appear in the list below, but doesn't, I ask that you politely e-mail me at sports@bannergraphic.com with their information.

Any omission is completely unintentional, although in the past some people have felt violently offended (and let me know, though not always politely) if someone was left out.

The toughest area when listing accomplishments for local athletes as the year progresses is when they are not given the opportunity to perform, whether by injury, inexperience or simply better performers in front of them.

There was an occasion in the few times this column appeared last spring in which a local athlete had low statistical numbers, and I received a hateful e-mail accusing me of "embarrassing" this athlete. Trust me, alienating my readership has never been a goal of my employment anywhere I have worked.

It turns out that an injury had kept this athlete from performing, and to be honest I didn't have time at that juncture in my tenure here to determine the reason for the low statistical numbers. Yes, I did update the information in print after being informed of the reason involving this athlete.

I will spend as much time as possible to find out why people haven't played, but there's no guarantee of getting a response.

I have not yet solved my dilemma of deciding whether omitting someone's name in this situation is better than putting their name with "no statistics available."

Football is the worst sport for which to find player statistics, since many positions on the field (such as offensive linemen) do not have statistics published on their school websites. We'll just do the best we can.

I am surprised at how few schools post depth charts on their websites; those would really be helpful in telling readers if someone is starting or second-strong on a position with no statistics available.

Lists for basketball, swimming and wrestling will be published in November, with baseball, softball and track and field coming up in March.

We have at least one rodeo guy, and several area athletes compete in equestrian at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. It's also possible others compete in lacrosse, rowing or other college-only sports. Help is badly needed for those sports.
