Doubles win paces Tiger Cubs past Northview, 3-2

Tiger Cubs to play for first place in WIC crossover

BRAZIL -- With the match tied at 2-2, Greencastle's No. 1 doubles team of Nathan Gobert and Elijah Lewis fought off a second-set loss and emerged victorious to pace the Tiger Cubs to a 3-2 win over Northview in a Western Indiana Conference match.

The Tiger Cubs got singles wins from Sean Ramey at No. 2 and Yuji Mozawa at No. 3.

With the win, the Tiger Cubs improved to 6-1 on the season and clinched first place in the West Division of the Western Indiana Conference standings.

Greencastle will host Brown County on Saturday for the WIC championship in the crossover round.

"I am very proud of the whole team," Greencastle coach Kevin Rowe said. "Northview has a great team. We were happy to pull out the win. We look forward to facing them again in sectionals."

Rowe is happy with his team's season to this point.

"I am very pleased with how we have progressed overall," he said. "I look forward to the second half of the season."

Volleyball

* Owen Valley 3, Cloverdale 1 -- At Cloverdale, the Clovers lost to the Patriots by the scores of 21-25, 25-23, 15-25 and 16-25.

Justyce Monnett and Kenzie Stoltz led with points each, while Hailey Thomas had six, Payten Simpson and Hannah Rady had four each, Tori Combs had three and Haley Maners added two.

Stoltz had three aces while Monnett had two.

Monnett lead the Clovers with 11 kills, while Combs had 10, Kassie Wade had four, Rady, Thomas and Stoltz had two each and Simpson added one.

Rady finished the night with 24 set-assists, while Combs had three blocks and Stoltz added one.

Thomas led the Clovers with 12 digs, while Rady had 10, Monnett and Combs had six each, Simpson and Stoltz had five each and Lauren Meek had three.

"We played tough the first two sets against a taller team but couldn't sustain the defense in sets three and four," Clover coach Kathy Moore said.

Cloverdale won the JV match in three sets.

The Clovers will play at South Putnam on Thursday in their final preparation for Saturday's county tournament.

* West Vigo 3, North Putnam 2 -- At West Terre Haute, North Putnam led the Vikings 2-1 after three sets but the hosts won the final two sets to claim the Western Indiana Conference victory.

* Cloverdale 2, Greencastle 0 -- The seventh-grade Lady Clovers defeated the Greencastle Tiger Cubs 25-19 and 25-21 on Tuesday night.

Leading the Clovers in serving were Abbi Yartz with nine points and seven aces, while Katelyn Smith had nine points and four aces.

The Clovers play at North Putnam on Monday.

Soccer

* North Putnam 3, West Vigo 2 -- At Roachdale, the match was scoreless at halftime but the Cougars remained undefeated by reaching the net three times in the second half.

Kaelynn Abner scored two goals for the Cougars, one assisted by Lauren Freije and another by Emilee Henninger.

The other Cougar goal was scored by Abby Spencer, on an assist by Abner.

North Putnam is now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Western Indiana Conference, and hosts North Montgomery on Thursday.
