Prep roundup: Tiger Cubs, Cougars pick up boys’ soccer victories

Friday, September 9, 2016

Both Greencastle and North Putnam picked up boys’ soccer victories on Tuesday by the score of 2-0.

Greencastle won at Southmont, while the Cougars won a home Western Indiana Conference match with West Vigo.

Tiger Cubs’ coach J.D. Sims was not happy with his team’s performance, despite its fourth straight victory, and hopes the team can build on the win in the future.

“Southmont was not the brightest moment for us in our season,” Sims said. “We let a high-pressing defense get the best of us.

“We had too many offsides penalties, and we did not open the field up like we should have.”

Jakob Foss scored a first-half goal to give the Tiger Cubs all the points they would need.

Sims said the “goal of the game” came in the second half, when Leo Weeks had a cross pass that Simon Foss headed across the goal.

“We look forward to improving upon this game,” Sims added. “This will be good wake up call for some of our more competitive games coming up that will decide the outcome of our conference chances.”

The Tiger Cubs opened the season with two wins, then suffered a loss and tie in their next two matches before the four-match winning streak began.

They hope to keep things going on Saturday at Cascade.

North Putnam got both of its goals in the first half.

Aidan Millican assisted the first goal by rolling the ball out to Brendan Chandler, who dribbled down the sideline for three-fourths of the field and beat two people of the dribble before putting a shot past their keeper.

Alex Krominaker had the second goal from a free kick.

“Michael Roach had an excellent game out of the back,” NP coach David Moeller said. “He won multiple balls out of the air.

In other soccer:

Southmont (girls) 5, Greencastle 3 — At New Market, the Lady Tigers traveled to Southmont Thursday to compete in a non-conference game.

“The first half offered passing and midfield dominance for Greencastle,” Tiger Cub coach Angie Weeks said. “The team was able to capitalize on distribution and playing a familiar game rich with communication and strong passing.”

The first and second Greencastle goals were scored by Erin Thomas and assisted by Whitney Weinschenk.

The third Greencastle goal was gained by Kaitlyn Dibble and assisted by Catherine Weeks.

The season record thus far is 3-4 and the conference record is still 1-1.

The team plays its second conference game at Cascade Saturday at 10 a.m.

Terre Haute South (girls) 7, Greencastle 0 – After a long duel in the heat, the Lady Tigers fell to Terre Haute South on Tuesday.

The match offered much defensive work for Claire Gillen, Ruth Heithaus, Megan Friars, Gretchen Weliever and Catherine Weeks, coach Angela Weeks said.

“Midfield action from Whitney Weinschenk and Erin Thomas enabled connections to Katie Kessler and Sarah Heithaus,” she said.

Weeks said South’s players were “quick on the ball and took shots from afar.”

Volleyball

Greencastle 3, North Montgomery 2 – At Crawfordsville, the Tiger Cubs fell behind 2-1 after three sets on Wednesday but stormed back to win the final two sets and claim the victory.

“We played well,” Clover coach Kathy Moore said. “Our passing was more consistent which allowed us to spread the ball around to all our hitters. It was a good win for us as we head into the county.”

Eagle coach Rachelle Custis looks for continued improvement from her team this weekend.

“We can’t focus on our record, but rather focus on what we need to work on in order to compete in the next match,” she said. “We will reflect on this match to help prepare for county.”

Golf

Edgewood 197, Greencastle 208 – At Bloomington, Greencastle’s Macey Masten shot a 47 on Wednesday to lead her team and earn medalist runnerup honors, but the Mustangs recorded the win.

Lindsey Bridgewater had a 50 for the Tiger Cubs, while Alex Weliever added a 51, Gabby Selvia had a 60 and Rose White had a 66.

Edgewood’s Megan Higgins was the medalist with a 41.

“We played fairly well,” Greencastle coach Robert Hedge said. “We really struggled with the slow greens, so our putting was not very good. Lindsey had a good day striking the ball, but could not quite break the sub-50 round.”

Eagles compete in quadrangular – At Brazil, South Putnam finished fourth on Tuesday in a quadrangular meet.

The host Knights won with a 198, while Rockville had a 219, South Vermillion had a 223 and the Eagles finished close behind with 229.

Alicia Haywood led the Eagles with a 51, while the remainder of the Eagle lineup all scored season lows – Reagan Ladd with a 57, Anna Carrington with a 59, Kristi Wood with a 62 and Leighla Hazlett with a 63.

“This was the best golf I’ve seen from our team all year,” Eagle coach Kevin Metz said. “This was the first time all year we were able to get four girls in the 50s.

“I couldn’t be more proud of their effort and play,” he added. “Forest Park is our sectional course, so I was happy to see lower scores.

Cross country

Vittetow wins again — At Clay City, South Putnam senior Kieffer Vittetow got another win and set an other course record on Thursday in the Clay City Invitational.

In the boys’ race, Vittetow’s time of 17:25 was nine seconds better than runnerup Austin Haskett of Edgewood as the Eagles won the team title by one point.

“Kieffer once again ran a strong race,” SP coach Brandon Welti said. “As a team, the boys did a great job of racing together and steadily moving up as the race progressed.”

Cloverdale’s top finisher was Chad Stevens in eighth.

SP’s Maddie McHugh finished fourth to lead her team in the girls’ race.

“Maddie McHugh and Ally Nichols did a great job of hanging tough and finishing in the top 10,” Welti said. “Having just five girls able to compete has been a challenge all year, but they’ve still been able to pull off some decent performances as a team.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to continue to improve, stay healthy, and keep competing despite the small size of the team.”

Welti was happy with his team despite some health concerns.

“Even with some illness issues, the boys all ran well enough to steal a win from the host school by just one point,” he said. “It was really impressive how well they battled competition and each other to pull this off.

The weather was also not ideal.

“It was a pretty hot and humid afternoon, but the boys and girls teams were both able to pull off some pretty good performances,” he said. “Overall, we’re pleased with how this went, but we know there is still a lot of room for improvement.”

Chelsie Edwards led the Cloverdale girls by placing seventh.

Kyle Young was 66th in the boys’ race in 22:23, while Grant Jarboe was 95th in 2:16.

“They were in their first official race so I wasn’t sure how exactly they would perform,” Lutes said. “They both showed a great deal of composure throughout the race.”
