Abbie Speas started playing golf three years ago in her freshman year. Last year, as a junior, she placed fifth in the Putnam County Meet.

Last month, she earned all-Western Indiana Conference honors by placing 10th in the conference meet. Her career-best round for nine holes is a 45.

Banner Graphic: What was your inspiration to start playing golf?

Abbie Speas: My dad loves to play golf, and he wanted me to try it. I wound up loving it. He let me start when I wanted to, and I decided to start as a freshman since my school offered it.

BG: Did you think you would achieve the successes you have despite playing for such a short time?

AS: No. This year, I was very happy to accomplish all-conference.

BG: What kinds of things in school do you like?

AS: Chemistry has been my favorite subject in school. Miss Hoffman has really inspired me. She graduated from a good college, and she’s really smart. I would stay after school almost every day during Chem 2 to learn even more from her. She has a lot of knowledge. It’s kind of bittersweet. Most of my high school career, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Now that I’m a senior, it’s just ‘wow’ — I have to become an adult and do all these adult things.

BG: Do you have pets?

AS: I have a three-legged cat that I love to death. We also have a dog, a Great Pyrenees. He’s gi-normous.

BG: What other things do you do in school?

AS: I’m in Ambassadors, National Arts Honor Society and Spanish Club. I used to play the flute in the band.

BG: Have you played other sports?

AS: I used to play basketball, but I decided to focus on golf.

BG: What do you like to do besides school and golf things?

AS: I like to go on vacation. My family takes a two-week vacation to Gulf Shores, Ala., every year. It’s a lot of fun. I love to swim. I like to read mystery novels. Since I got my license, my friends and I have started going to movies and to the mall. Before that, I was pretty much a stay-home person.

BG: What are your plans for after high school?

AS: I am going to Ivy Tech, then transferring to Indiana to pursue nursing.

BG: Do you expect to keep playing golf as an adult?

AS: I can see that.
