Greencastle (4-0, 2-0) at Cascade (1-3, 1-1)

Game time: 7 p.m.

The coaches: Mike Meyer is in his seventh year at Greencastle. Steve Spinks is in his first year at Cascade.

Last week: Greencastle shut out South Putnam 28-0, while the Cadets lost 8-6 to Cloverdale.

History: Cascade won 34-24 last year to snap a four-game losing streak against the Tiger Cubs.

WIC impact: This is a non-conference game.

Key players: Senior running back Devin Clar has gained 699 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns. Fellow senior Derek Ummel has gained 173 yards with one score. Quarterback Nick Costin has passed for 453 yards and five touchdowns with only one interception.

Defensively, Elijah Williams leads with 41 tackles (seven for losses).

The Cadets are primarily a running team and passed for only 64 yards in their first three games.

Coach Meyer on his team: “We have had a very good week of practice. The guys are staying focused, and we are pretty pleased with what we got done this week. Last week, I thought we did a pretty good job with basic stuff and were pretty solid. We were a little inconsistent at times on offense. We gave up a couple of big plays on defense, one of those because of a bad call on my part. Other than that I thought we did well and we shut out a very good football team. Our kids up front had a very good night. We have to keep being consistent with that and keep pressuring the quarterback.”

Coach Meyer on Cascade: “They try to run the ball, and they have some very good skill kids. Their line has good size. We are going to have to work on getting through them. They just seem to have not quite put it together quite yet, but it’s a good football team with good speed.”

Cloverdale (2-2, 2-0) at North Putnam (3-1, 1-1)

Game time: 7 p.m.

Media coverage: WREB-FM 94.3 will broadcast the game.

Special events: Homecoming, as well as many special activities planned as part of the “PS I Love You” fundraiser for pediatric cancer.

The coaches: Greg Barrett is in his eighth year at North Putnam. Tony Meyer is in his second year at Cloverdale.

Last week: Cloverdale defeated Cascade 8-6 in a game that started on Friday and finished on Saturday due to weather. North Putnam lost its first game of the year, a 33-19 decision at Sullivan.

History: North Putnam has won the last 12 meetings. Cloverdale’s last win came on Oct. 15, 2004.

WIC impact: This is a non-conference game.

Key players: North Putnam has three running backs (Solomon Gross, Ethan Christy and Gage Bell) averaging more than 50 yards per game.

Coach Meyer on his team: “The kids are working even harder than they have been, and we are getting some people healthy. I’m about as happy as a clam with the effort. We are going to keep Tyce [Jackson] at quarterback. We are not a passing team, and it just speeds up the process of getting him the ball. He sees the field very well, and he has the option to audible out of anything we call if he sees an open spot. He does have an arm, and he knows his limits.”

Coach Meyer on North Putnam: “They have a lot of size and speed and are incredibly well coached. They are tough kids. They have a great offensive line, and Gross and Christy are both excellent running backs. [Hayden] Rudes at QB is a dual threat. Their linebackers are fantastic. There really isn’t a weakness in their team. We have to find a way to get to the outside, and find a way to avoid their big boys. This is going to be a tough fight, just like Greencastle was. We have to find a way. That’s been our motto. If we keep it close, within one or two scores going into the fourth quarter, we have a shot.”

Coach Barrett on his team: “Don’t think I’ve ever had to start off playing four in a row on the road. The bright side is going 3-1, and that’s a pretty good deal. There’s no doubt the [weather] delays hurt us, but they had to wait too. Between the second and third delays, if we could have stayed out there 20-13 with four minutes in half it would have helped. It was crazy because we waited around so long. But our biggest problem was that we got down two scores too early, and then we started playing like we should. We feel like we didn’t play to our potential last week. We know what we have to do to get better and that’s just show up. We’re excited about where we’re at now.”

Coach Barrett on Cloverdale: “They have got some good athletes, and they’re a pretty good team. They are 2-2 and confdient. We don’t take anybody lightly. They have two good wins [over Cascade and Edgewood]. They have a good quarterback who is shifty and can move. He makes things happen. They have good speed, and big kids up front who are physical. It’s going to be another tough game.”

Coach Barrett on his team’s first home game, and response to the “PS I Love You” awareness/fundraising effort: “The kids are pretty fired up. No coach is excited about the distractions of homecoming as far as the game goes, but it’s great for the community and the school. They’ve done a great job of providing a great atmosphere this week. We’ve got great kids, and they’re excited about getting to play at home. The response to ‘PS I Love You’ has been neat from the other coaches in the association. We will see what kind of money we can raise for a great cause. This is something we can do every year.”

Edgewood (0-4, 0-2) at South Putnam (2-2, 0-2)

Edgewood (0-4, 0-2)

at South Putnam (2-2, 0-2)

Defensively, Shaffer leads with 47 tackles (seven for losses) while sophomore Dalton Scott is second with 30.

Edgewood is also primarily a running team. Senior Logan Day is the leading rusher wilth 150 yards and one touchdown. Senior Sam Jeatran has 10 catches for 151 yards. Senior Chase Oltman paces the defense with 28 tackles.

Coach Aker on his team: “We must be able to successfully manage the distractions that accompany homecoming week. We’re looking for a commitment to focus on the task at hand while continuing to improve all facets of our game. We have had a good week of practice and if we keep our focus, we will be able to show it tonight. We’re looking forward to playing at home again in front of our community.”

Coach Aker on Edgewood: “Edgewood is a well-coached football team who is looking to break through in the win/loss column. They’ve got several dynamic players and they do a good job getting the football in their hands. This has the potential to be a good football game.”
