Soccer

Greencastle (boys) 7, West Vigo 0 — The Tiger Cubs improved to 8-1-1 with a shutout over the visiting Vikings on Tuesday.

“We played very well,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said. “We knew coming into the game that we had not played our passing style the last few games. We came into this game looking to the move the ball like the efficient team we can be. We did just that. Ball movement was great. We got the ball wide better than we have all year. “

Sims thought the team was more focused on offense, and Kevin Polster was “rock solid” in the middle of the field, starting much of the team’s attacking play and setting the pace.

“Nate Trissel also had a great game, keeping his side at bay the whole game and finding space to attack from the back,” he added. “It was also good to see some of our younger, upcoming players put braces in tonight.”

Freshmen Ben Wilkerson and Hector Lezama both got two goals apiece, while junior Seth Nichols added two goals and an assist. Evan Crowe contributed one goal and two assists, while freshman Jakob Foss had two assists.

“Overall we looked good and will keep preparing for our conference showdown against Sullivan this weekend,” Sims said.

Tiger Cub girls split pair — Greencastle lost 3-2 at West Vigo on Tuesday but rebounded to defeat Brown County 5-2 on Thursday.

“Strong defensive action pushed the offense to gain two goals during the game,” Greencastle coach Angie Weeks said of the West Vigo match. “Unfortunately the opponents were quick to action and garnered three goals.”

Erin Thomas scored both goals with an assist from Claire Gillen. The second goal was a penalty kick. Goal keeper Claire Gillen had 16 saves.

The Tiger Cubs overcame a short-handed roster on Thursday, as due to continued injuries the team played down with only 10 players on the pitch.

Weeks said midfield dominance led the team to advance at the half with a score of 2-1.

“Tempo and pace were both set as all players executed strong passing and fought for 50-50 balls,” she said.

Thomas knocked each goal to the back of the net. Catherine Weeks earned an assist during the first half while Corinne Buchanan stepped up the game during the second by laying off three assists to Thomas.

Goal keeper Claire Gillen had eight saves.

The team plays again on Saturday against Sullivan at DePauw’s Boswell Field at noon. Senior Recognition will be held prior to the game.

Owen Valley (boys) 0, North Putnam 0 — The Patriots and Cougars tied, despite North Putnam having 10 shots on goal.

Tyler Thompson and Dylan Webster each had three shots for NP, while Brendan Chandler and Caleb Duncan had two each.

“It was a pretty even game, even though I feel like we had more and better opportunities to score,” NP coach David Moeller said. “We had one shot on goal in the first half and in the second played better, having nine shots on goal.”

“With our one meet getting canceled last week it feels like it’s been a long time since we have competed in a meet,” Clover coach Matt Langdon said. “You could tell there was some rust there. Speas went out and played a great round to lead the way.”

Langdon was glad to be able to use more golfers.

“This was a nice opportunity for all the girls to play,” he said. “We have a bigger team this year and though some girls have not got a lot of meets in, they have worked hard to improve.”

SP coach Kevin Metz was happy with his team.

“The rest of the girls [after Alicia] were pretty consistent with their averages, having a few of them score a stroke or two better than their average,” he said. “Anna and Kristi both scored well for us and I was happy to see lower scores from them both. Leighla, Reagan and Kate all played well. They all said they could have done a little better, but struggled a little on a couple holes.”

Tri-West 216, South Putnam 227 — At Clover Meadows on Wednesday, South Putnam’s Alicia Haywood was the meet medalist with a 50.

Anna Carrington had a season low score of 54, while Kristi Wood had a personal best of 57, Leighla Hazlett had a 66, Kate McCammack had a 69 and Reagan Ladd had a 74.

“On senior night, the Lady Eagles had a lot of good things to talk about,” Metz said. “While we didn’t come home with the victory, we did shoot a season-low round 227. We had good senior leadership to show having Alicia Haywood take home meet medalist honors for the second straight night and Kristi Wood shooting a personal best 57.

“I was so happy to have them finish well on their night of recognition.”

Metz wanted to thank all of the parents who showed up to support his seniors.

“It goes to show that South Putnam has great supporters from the community,” he said.
