Masten, Haywood tie for medalist despite playoff

CLOVERDALE — Greencastle’s Macey Masten and South Putnam’s Alicia Haywood tied for the lead with 10-over par rounds of 46 on Thursday evening in the Putnam County girls’ golf match at Clover Meadows.

Masten and Haywood played three playoff holes to try to break the tie, and with the final of those holes played in nearly pitch darkness the two golfers were named co-medalists.

Both golfers started slugglishly, recording double bogeys on holes one and three.

Masten recorded pars on holes two and six, while Haywood had a par on No. 5. A double bogey by Masten on No. 5 offset one of her pars.

Greencastle won the team competition with a 204, edging Cloverdale by five strokes.

Lindsey Bridgewater had been seeded as the third player for the Tiger Cubs, but provided the team’s second-best score.

Bridgewater’s medalist chances were hurt by a nine on the par 5 fifth hole. She bounced back with threes on both No. 7 and No. 8 to tie for third with Taylor Dixon of North Putnam.

The remainder of the all-county team consisted of a trio of Cloverdale golfers in Abbie Speas, Abby Walker and Hannah Nichols.

Nichols also outperformed her seeding, shooting the third-best score for the Clovers from the No. 5 position in the lineup.

North Putnam’s Abby Simmerman and Emily Eltz just missed out on all-county honors, both finishing with a 53 to put them one stroke away.

Greencastle repeated its team title of 2015, and Haywood also repeated as medalist. She shot a 42 a year ago. Masten was fifth last year, shooting a 48.
