Upcoming technology classes slated at PCPL

Putnam County Public Library will be offering four computer classes during October.

On Friday, Sept. 30, the library will begin a three-part, hands-on computer basics course with Introduction to Computers Part One from noon to 2 p.m. It is designed to help users understand how the computer works will give you the confidence to tackle future tasks on your own. Topics covered will include history of computers, how a computer works, basic computer operation and mouse exercises.

Friday, Oct. 7 from noon to 2 p.m., part two of Introduction to Computers series will build on part one by teaching users to understand the words people use when talking about computers by navigating the computer and understanding the why and the how. Topics covered will include applications, operating systems and hands-on with a graphical user interface.

Friday, Oct. 14, from noon to 2 p.m., part three of the Introduction to Computers series will build on part two by walking you through the most important parts of the operating system, managing your installed applications and organizing your personal computer files. Get used to creating folders, saving files and learning how to cut, copy and paste. Topics covered include files and folders, copy and paste, and adding and removing applications.

On Monday, Oct. 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., a Tablets and Smartphones class is for those who need help with a new smartphone or tablet, or are considering making a purchase. Class will discuss the different types of devices available, including the Apple iPad, Microsoft Windows tablets, Android-based Google tablets and smartphones. Attendees will learn basic skills needed to connect to the Internet as well as how to take pictures and videos, use interactive maps, install applications and games, listen to music and watch movies. There will also be a demonstration on how to download free content from the library’s website including eBooks and audiobooks.

All classes are for beginners and are free and open to the public but registration is required since space is limited. Classes are two hours long with a break. To sign up for any of the upcoming classes, you can view the library website at pcpl21.org, call Mike at 653-2755 Ext. 118, or stop by the circulation or reference desks at the library.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Oct. 3 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the Putnam County Public Library in cooperation with the Greencastle Community School Corporation will present Technology in the Classroom.

A representative from the school corporation and the technology director of the library will give parents an overview of iPad use, Canvas, Google Drive and Notability as well as answer technology questions.

Technology in the Classroom is an effort to position the public library as a partner with the school system providing supplemental educational resources, internet access, technical support and training to both parents and students.
