Pair of rematches on schedule as tennis sectional starts today

Tourney time is getting into full gear this week at both the conference and sectional level for Putnam County teams. Here are some updates:

Tennis

The Northview sectional will begin today at 5 p.m., with the host Knights taking on Greencastle.

South Putnam will battle with Owen Valley at 6:30 p.m., with the winners meeting on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the championship.

Both contests are rematches of regular-season action, as both Greencastle and Owen Valley recorded 3-2 victories earlier this month over tonight’s opponents.

Greencastle earlier won the Western Indiana Conference title with a 4-1 victory over Brown County.

The sectional winner advances to the Crawfordsville regional next week.

Cross country

The Western Indiana Conference meet will be run on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course east of Terre Haute.

The event will start at 10 a.m.

A different location had previously been announced for the meet.

Golf

South Putnam coach Kevin Metz notes that Eagle senior Alicia Haywood shot a career-low score of 94 on Saturday at Smock Golf Course in the IHSAA regional in her final high school meet.

“While Alicia didn’t advance, she played extremely well,” Metz said. “There was a lot of really good competition, but that didn’t affect the way she played.”

Metz thought her focus was good for the regional meet.

“We talked about playing the course, not her opponents before she teed off,” he said. “Sometimes players get too worried about what the others around them are doing and don’t focus on their own round.

“She did a great job staying focused throughout her entire round,” Metz added. “She hit the ball off the tee well all day and again did a good job around the greens.”

Metz was pleased with how Haywood closed out her career.

“Being all-conference, county co-champ and a regional qualifier in her last season is an Eagle is a great way to go out,” he said.

Soccer

Sectional action begins on Monday with North Putnam’s girls playing the hosts at Tri-West at 5 p.m. and the Greencastle boys playing Covington at 7 p.m. at South Vermillion.

On Tuesday, Greencastle’s girls play North Montgomery at 5 p.m. at Tri-West.

North Putnam’s boys open tourney play next Wednesday by battling Tri-West in the Bethesda Christian sectional at Brownsburg.

Championships will take place later in the week.

Football

The tourney draw is Sunday, and the sectionals begin on Oct. 21.

Volleyball

The tourney draw is Oct. 10, and the sectionals begin on Oct. 18.
