Greencastle’s volleyball team has struggled since winning the county tournament earlier this month, but is hopeful that a three-set win over North Putnam on Thursday evening can be the springboard to closing out the final two weeks of the regular season strongly.

Senior Madison Trout thinks her team has been on the cusp of several wins lately, but just couldn’t finish the deal.

“This win will motivate us to keep going and go harder in games,” she said. “A win in general just lifts up your spirits, so that’s good, but we have to keep working hard and go for it.

“We’ve been playing some good teams lately,” Trout said. “We have gotten close to them, but haven’t been able to finish and get the win.

“We are working on finishing out games better.”

Sophomore setter Jalyn Duff is confident her team is on its way to fixing any recent problems.

“We haven’t been playing as well as we want to,” she said. “We’ve been making a lot of silly errors, but we’re going to fix it and come back and be better.”

She thinks Thursday was a good starting place for that improvement.

“I think it was a good win,” Duff said. “We worked together as team, and this will show us we can win.”

Trout had eight aces, eight kills and 11 digs for the Tiger Cubs, while Duff had 13 digs and 28 assists, Sarah Miller had seven kills and Maggie Meyer had 13 digs.

For North Putnam, Bradi Gierke had six kills, Kinzey Young had three kills, Haley Abdon had seven digs, Ainslee Vogt had four assists and five digs, Lyndi Parent had five assists, six digs and two aces, Aleah Duncan had five digs, Grace Willard had four digs and Bronwyn Spencer had two blocks.

Soccer

Tiger Cubs drop pair — Greencastle’s boys’ team had moved up to No. 15 this week in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Class 1A rankings, but closed out the regular season by losing their final two matches this week to enter sectional play on a three-match losing streak.

Terre Haute North defeated Greencastle 4-0 on Tuesday, while the Tiger Cubs lost 3-1 at Cascade on Wednesday.

“Terre Haute North was a good team,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said. “They moved the ball well and their back line was very solid. We had some weak moments defensively that led to some goals.”

Sims was not unhappy with the effort against such a strong program.

“Overall we moved the ball well,” he said. “There were several moments in the game where we controlled much of the possession. I was happy to see the way we moved the ball against such a disciplined team.

“A lot of positives can be taken from the game as well look forward to our sectional challenge next Monday.”

Sims was not as pleased with Wednesday’s effort.

“We started out strong the first half, moving the ball well and controlling play,” he said. “In the second half we played poor defense and let the team come back and score three goals in 12 minutes.

“It was a poor showing and we must improve if we plan to win our sectional.”

Evan Crowe scored the only Tiger Cub goal in the first half with an assist from Seth Nichols.

The Tiger Cubs play Covington at 7 p.m. Monday in the South Vermillion sectional.
