HSE and free prep classes set at Area 30

Friday, September 30, 2016

Rather than the General Educational Development (GED), adults needing an alternative to earning a high school diploma will now take the High School Equivalency (HSE) test.

Like the GED, the test demonstrates whether students’ knowledge in math, reading, writing, science and social studies is at the same levels as a high school senior’s. Adult Basic Education classes to prepare for the test are free, and total cost to take the test -- which includes all tests, test scoring, transcripts and the Indiana HSE Diploma -- is $90.

The Area 30 Career Center has offered the test and its preparation courses for the past 30 years.

“Education is a key factor in helping individuals transition from poverty to the middle class,” Laura Elsbrock, Adult Education program coordinator, said. “We offer free classes that are available as early as 7:30 a.m. and evening classes through 6:30 p.m. Students can come to class around their work schedule, and they and can even work from home online, if needed.”

Anyone having not already earned a diploma from an accredited high school in the U.S. can sign up for test in-person at their nearest testing office, which can be found at in.gov/dwd/adulted_locations.htm. You must bring one government-issued photo ID.

Students who are 16 years old will need a release from the superintendent of their school and will be required to take a minimum of 12 hours of classroom instruction and meet pre-HSE test score requirements.

Putnam County residents can learn more by visiting the Area 30 Career Center website or by calling the Area 30 Adult Education Program at 653-3515.
