Indiana State Police

A Greencastle man found himself in the Clay County Jail Thursday evening after attempting to flee an Indiana State trooper.

At 8:05 p.m., Master Trooper Todd Brown attempted to stop a gray 1984 Yamaha motorcycle on eastbound U.S. 40 near Clay County Road 425 West for traveling 68 mph in a 55-mph zone.

As Brown activated his emergency lighting, the motorcycle driver refused to stop and attempted to flee.

Moments later, the cycle came to a stop on eastbound U.S. 40 near CR 300 West due to mechanical issues. Trooper Brown quickly approached the driver and took him into custody.

Further investigation revealed the driver, 31-year-old Charles Allen Spiker, was in possession of a stolen handgun, approximately 4.9 grams of methamphetamine, approximately two grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The handgun was reported stolen out of Putnam County and the motorcycle had not been registered through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Spiker was booked in on felony charges of possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamine as well as misdemeanor counts of possession of a handgun without a permit, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

County Jail

Two people were booked in the Putnam County Jail on Thursday.

• At 2:14 p.m. Sara Jane Frazier, 34, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail on a warrant for theft.

• At 1:01 p.m. Donald Dale Smith, 42, Greencastle, was taken into custody on a warrant for domestic battery.

City Police

One summons for driving with a suspended license was issued Thursday night by Greencastle Police.

• At 10:55 p.m., Lisa Moser, 51, Greencastle, was stopped on North Indiana Street by Officer Brad Hiatt.

Moser will be summoned into court on a charge of driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

Sheriff’s Department

At 10:11 a.m. on Wednesday, Kimberly L. Courtois, 43, St. Jacob, Ill., was westbound on Interstate 70 at the 40-mile marker in a 2015 Nissan Versa.

Courtois told Deputy Virgil Lanning she saw an object in the road and could not avoid it.

Later discovered to be a drive shaft, the object blew out the right rear tire of the car as well as causing both airbags to deploy.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.
