Tiger Cubs close out season with win

CLINTON — The Greencastle girls’ soccer team closed out the regular season on Wednesday with a 2-0 win at South Vermillion.

“The squad was able to connect positively on the field with strong passing and defensive tactics to bring home the win,” Greencastle coach Angie Weeks said. “Excellent tempo was established early in the game by Katie Kessler and Whitney Weinschenk.”

Both Greencastle goals came in the first half.

The first goal was made by Erin Thomas with an assist from Kessler. The second goal was shot by Corinne Buchanan with an assist given by Claire Gillen.

The Tiger Cubs open sectional play at Tri-West on Tuesday by meeting North Montgomery at 5 p.m.

“The team is excited to enter into sectionals with a full roster and to play with open communication, dynamic passing, and strong attacks both on and off the ball,” Weeks said. “They look forward to the community support.”

In other soccer:

• Covington (boys) 5, North Putnam 1 — At Roachdale, the Trojans got three first-half goals and never trailed on Thursday.

Aiden Millican had the only goal for the Cougars, on an assist from Alex Krominaker.

North Putnam opens sectional play on Wednesday at Bethesda Christian in Brownsburg, meeting Tri-West at 5 p.m.

Tennis

Regional pairings set — The field is now set for the Crawfordsville boys’ regional on Tuesday.

Greencastle (12-3) plays Turkey Run (17-2) in one semifinal match, while the other match is between Terre Haute South (13-8) and Covington (14-3).

Both matches begin at 4:45 p.m., with the winners meeting on Wednesday for the regional title.

Football

Pairings show set Sunday — First round sectional matchups in the 44th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament presented by the Indianapolis Colts will be announced Sunday via television, radio and webstream.

This year’s drawing is being conducted one week earlier than normal due to the Colts playing a home game on the previously scheduled date of Oct. 9.

The 90-minute television show will be carried exclusively on Fox Sports Indiana, the home of IHSAA championships, beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Originating from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the show will be hosted by legendary broadcaster Jerry Baker, Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star and Jeremiah Johnson of Fox Sports Indiana.

For viewers outside of the Fox Sports Indiana coverage area, a live stream will be available at IHSAAtv.org. For those within the FSI coverage area, the stream will be available only on delayed basis later that evening.

From 8:10 p.m. ET, radio listeners may join Indiana Sports Talk’s Bob Lovell and Paul Condry of Regional Radio Sports Network and Greg Rakestraw of 1070 The Fan for their pairings show on any of the affiliates of the IHSAA Champions Radio Network.

Originating from Emmis Communications on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, Lovell, Condry and Rakestraw will go in‐depth on some of the top sectionals in all six classes and collect reaction from coaches across the state.
